In an incredibly unique graphic novel drome, Jesse Ronergan delivers a singular story of human origin. The once-in-a-lifetime drome is available from 23rd Avenue, currently located at your nearest bookstore. In the meantime, there’s everything you need to know about the graphic novel that Comics Beat Review calls editor Zack Quaintance “the early forwards of the 2025 Book of the Year.”
The Art of Ronagan
Channeling some of the legends of sequential graphics stories and bringing his own flavours to the table, Lonergan uses over 300 pages of the drome to convey the myth of creation, an equal part of fantasy and science fiction. The first thing you notice about drome is the size of the book. This hardcover version is 7.95 x 1.2 x 10.35 inches. Both page size and page count allow readers to enjoy artistic detail as the story unfolds.
Starting with Drome’s dust jacket and cover, followed by the end paper and the page itself, you’ll notice that Lonergan uses the grid to organize his pages. However, this is not something like a rigid nine panel grid page that you may be more familiar with. This grid consists of five columns, each of which consists of seven columns. However, depending on the page, these panels may be merged or split in a variety of ways.
What’s more, Lonergan doesn’t always tell the story in a simple panel-to-panel way. Many times, different groups of panels on the page are used to view concurrent actions or highlight details that were not apparent in the larger central panel. Additionally, Lonergan uses artistic manipulation of white and groove spaces to ease the story, even if it doesn’t follow the progression of standard Western comic panels.
Drom
As for the story itself, Drom tells a story that he will soon never forget. As mentioned above, the storyline conveys a unique and original myth of creation. Under the careful eyes of giant celestial beings, violent people are conquered by the arrival of superhumans who survive the battle against giant crustaceans and can move away from the attacks of relatively unharmed humanity. But how does the story get complicated when she meets another, more wild, superhuman?
Perhaps what is particularly noteworthy about the drome is the fact that you achieve all this with a very minimal use of dialogue. Graphic novels aren’t completely without dialogue, but they look modest. But Lonergan’s detailed, beautifully colored artwork is more than making up for the lack of more words.
During the process of the drome, you will be amazed at how closely you will get to know the hero. You will be enthusiastic about their victory and will be disappointed with their defeat. All this will be an unforgettable graphic novel that you’ll want to pull off the shelf and revisit again and again.
