You can’t suppress a good phantom. The iconic character of Lon Chaney from Phantom of the Opera has returned in time for the official release of the creepy season, this time as a giant hardback graphic novel of the legendary comic. Currently living on Kickstarter, the graphic novel features around 120 pages and features Chaney’s portrait as Horror Stalwart.
This is similar to the publisher’s arrangement with Belargosi and Boris Karloff estate, along with previous Dracula and Frankenstein entries. Legendary has become creative with its release as Universal has an aggressive publishing agreement with Skybound for the highly popular Universal Monster comic. For this particular horror line, the legend creates a story with public domain characters, giving it a whole new look that features portraits of the actor who played the characters in live action.
Ron Cheney, Ron’s great grandson and boss of Cheney Entertainment, says there’s only one person to play the Phantom.
“I am delighted to be working with the legendary comic about the adaptation of Gaston Leroux in the ‘Phantom of Opera’ graphic novel. No one can imagine anything but the personification of Ron Cheney’s Phantom. It’s perfect. ”
The legendary comic publisher Robert Napton – the publishing division of legendary entertainment (Godzilla, Dune) – reflected emotions.
“The opportunity to celebrate Longcheney’s 100 years as an opera phantom is a dream project. Cheney is an iconic phantom and his performances have never been comparable to this point.
Phantom of the Opera is currently funding Kickstarter for its first push into the market before passing through more traditional books and direct market channels. The cover remains the same between releases, but Kickstarter includes some exclusives, including a reprint of the original Phantom Movie program and a replica copy of the first scripted draft of the film itself.
It is currently funded until October 15th, and at the time of writing it has raised more than half of its $70,000 target.
