Sturm & Sutphin’s Watership Down Adaptation wins French Critics Comic Award

James Sturm and Joe Satfin’s Richard Adams’ 1972 adaptation of the novel Waters Down was announced as the seventh recipient of the French Association of Comic Critics and Journalists (ACBD) annual comic awards for the English version of material. It was translated into French by Pierre Clinquart and Hélène Charrier and published in April this year by Monsieur Toussaint Louverture. The French publisher of Watership Down will win the award at a ceremony in late October over the weekend of the Quadurus Festival in St. Malo.

ACBD describes Sturm & Sutphin’s graphic novel (translated via Deepl).

“It’s a narrative that is horribly human yet deeply animalistic, and is a life-filled story with words and drawings by Sturm and Sutphin. They are a project that can attract readers from both sides of the Atlantic, making this dark, uncompromising story even more accessible through precise drawings and false coloring.”

First released in English by Puffin in 2023, Watership Down competed fairly tightly in the competition on the candidate list, including the French version of Craig Thompson’s Ginseng Roots (Casterman). Becky Cloonan & Tula Lotay’s Somna (Delcourt); James Tinion IV, Fernando Blanco and Geordy Beller’s worldtr33 (city comics); Juni Ba & Chris O’Halloran’s Robin: The Boy Wonder (Urban Comics).

Launched in 2019, Prix Comics is one of several awards awarded by the French Association of Comic Critics and Journalists (L’Association des Criticism and Journalists de Bande Dessinée, ACBD), with nominees and winners being selected by member vote. All eligible books must have been published in French between August 2024 and July 2025.

Choosing the best works published in French, sourced from Anglophone Sphere (US, UK, Australia, etc.), Prix Comics complements ACBD Prix Asie with translated works sourced from Asia (Japan, China, Korea, etc.). The winner of last year’s Prix Comics ACBD was Will McPhail’s graphic novel, Will McPhail’s 2021 graphic novel published in 2024 by 404 graphics in French.
