Daniel Warren Johnson’s run on Transformers reboot ended with this 24th issue. A massive showdown took place between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Prime begins to show off his sympathy with his nobility, and Megatron becomes the villain we know and dislike.
The problem starts out in an epic way, with a brilliantly crisp and highly impactful expanded fight sequence, but when it finishes, the rails fall a bit off.
The two characters come out of nowhere in the actual Deus ex Machina moment, enveloping everything, and Optimus Prime looks weaker (and steals agency) as the bad guys are defeated.
This is somewhat reminiscent of countless other media outlets when it comes to classic ’80s comics and villains who choose to kill their heroic nemesis, but it goes against the more modern feel of this Transformers series, which puts a modern spin on the nostalgic G1 Transformers characters and storylines.
It’s also very frustrating to see certain characters pop up and resolve the crisis right away. What happens at at least one of these critical moments is less clear.
Still, Johnson’s run is nearing its end, so I think I’ll leave it there. Robert Kirkman takes over the writing duties as of issue 25, but his work has not been interested in me for a long time. Even Johnson’s storyline has the steam growing before hitting this climax, so I can’t say I’m interested in continuing to read Transformers, especially as Kirkman appears to be crooked into hell with awkwardly shoes on his face in the shared universe of these comics. Maybe it’ll be my loss, but if it turns out I’m wrong, I can always pick up the deal, right?
