Carla Speed McNeill is one of our great living cartoonists. I said that. Their longtime science fantasy comic finder is a complex stew of dramas of plot, anthropology, magic and quotes. The best immersive worldbuilding, and yes, it takes a sweet time to go anywhere, but that’s the overall point, and at the same time, it’s presented a voice that knows everything and descends on the earth. The art features inventive and intuitive storytelling that has become a precious collaborator on comics that he hasn’t written for people like Greg Rucka to Alex de Campi.
The viewfinder was probably too immersive. McNeill has been taking a burnt-out, induced break from publishing quite a few pieces for years…but this weekend ends with SPX, the SPX, when he debuts the Stormworld Settlers. As McNeil posted on Bluesky:
My first new comic, in years, will debut on SPX next weekend. Stietlers of the Storm Worlds saddle stitch preview, limited edition with signatures and numbers, in a beautiful black and white for $10. Read it for free on my Patreon. www.patreon.com/carlaspeedmc… Share and recommend

The story is explained in this way:
Ellary’s Rammage and his family are caught up in a covered wagon filled with everything the witch people need, hoping to pass through the vast, destructive hurricane eyes made from broken reality, like a magical black hole. For a journey of portal fiction fans, genre conflicts and self-discovery!
In fact, you can read a few pages of Settlers in the Storm World at McNeill’s Patreon. And with this reappearance, McNeil appeared on Reddit in a thread called “What happened to Cara Speed McNeil?”
No, it’s not a viewfinder, but what I want to do is to create the first chapter of each of the five different books that have been stuck in the doorway of my heart for many years. I have to put all of this on paper. So I started now and then I proceed to the next one and finally I go to the viewfinder again.
And the raccoon crime squad is very fun, including baby raccoons and their centrifugal bird feeders.
Thank you to everyone who is still looking for my job. It’s coming.
Five new series and the raccoon crime squad? Why am I so excited? Here are a few pages of settlers I shamelessly snatched from the Patreon. I’m invested!
Once you reach SPX, create a beeline for Carla’s Table.
