Eisner Award-winning Skottie Young brought the classic icon into the mix. Popeye The Salor Man will become a guest star from Image Comics to Guest Star, who hates Fairyland #45 this October. The spinach-loving sailor joins Gert’s chaotic world with questions explained by guest cartoonist Jay Fosgit (Marvel Fairy Tales, Body Troll).
“Jay (Fosgit) is a talented cartoonist and I’m lucky he’s able to get us to participate,” Young said. “Popeye is one of Jay’s favorite characters and he portrays him beautifully. Now that he has Popeye in the public domain, it felt like the perfect time to get him on board.
This is not the first time Young has drawn legendary characters for a surprising appearance. The rich question introduced everyone from Dorothy and Toto to Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and even Mickey Mouse on Steamboat Willy.
In Issue 45, Gert and Larry take him to the high seas on a hunt in search of a giant creature that may hold a secret to send Gert home. Unfortunately, they are quickly out of their depths. And that’s when Popeye appears to lend a hand.
I hate Fairyland #45 set with three covers on Wednesday, October 15th.
Fans who want to catch up with Gert’s unfortunate adventures can find printed series at comic shops, bookstores, and online retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Indigo, Waterstones, and more.
