Immortal Legend Batman #1 is a comic that involved me from the moment I heard about it. They had me in the writings of Kyle Higgins and Matt Groom. The duo has been behind my favorite cartoons in recent years, including Radiant Black, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Ultraman X Avengers. The whole concept is drawn from Tokyo and I’m a huge fan of Toku shows like Kamen Rider. Finally, I took a picture of Batman myth and gave it a sci-fi spin to appeal to my inner Star Trek/Star Wars/Mass Effect fans. But does Immortal Legend Batman #1 live up to the hype? In a nutshell: Yes.
In the distant universe, a malicious creature known as the “shadows” came to life when humanity broke the barriers between the universes. The only thing standing between them is Batman, who was able to use this energy to good use along with his partners, Robin and Nightwing. Batman’s quest takes him to a distant planet, where he searches for Bruce Wayne, claiming he is infected with the shadows. Meanwhile, Wayne claims that Batman eventually succumbed to the dark half of his nature and began killing people.
Kicking off the Elseworlds story is a twist hell, but that’s also worthy. If you’re writing a Batman story, you’re writing a mystery first and foremost. This is, after all, a character known as the “world’s biggest detective.” To their credit, Higgins and the Groom keep readers on their toes through Batman Immortal Legend #1, bringing some cards closer to their chest, saving some of the biggest reveals in the right moment. By the time I reached the final page, I wanted to learn more about this world and see their views on other Batman friends and enemies.

Higgins and the groom not only brought a sci-fi/toku vibe to the page of Immortal Legend Batman #1. They also brought an incredible art team with Erica D’Urso and Igor Monti, who previously worked with Groom at Inferno Girl Red. The design of D’Urso in Batman’s “Immortal Legend” form is incredible. It’s all refined armor, a tough angle you might expect from a Batman suit, not to mention the high-tech talent that suits Kamen’s rider suit, shattering Batman with a darker version of his infamous enemy, not to mention the tranquil talent that suits Kamen’s rider suit, and smashing Batman into the pit. The rest of the fashion also feels futuristic, with Monty’s colours casting plenty of shadows across each corner, drawing a bright and lively picture of the space. Becca Carey fills it up with her unique lettering, literally glitching certain sentences according to the character.
The backup story features artwork by Danmora and Tamrabon Villains, delving into the history of this Elseworlds. It’s not only great to see Mora working for Batman, the immortal legend, but it’s also worthy. A long time ago, I saw an illustration of the entire bat family inspired by his good. This served as an inspiration for this project. If the immortal legend Batman takes off, I’d love to see Mora give the other DC heroes the same treatment or do a similar comic to his Spider-Man-themed Toku’s drawing.
Immortal Legend Batman #1 mixes High Sci-Fi, Toku-style action and compelling mystery into one of the best Elseworlds DCs that have been done over the years. Batman fans will definitely love it, but comic rookies have the perfect entry point. Also, Toku fans have a new story that hooks fellow fans.

D’Urso’s artwork is dynamic and perfectly fits the sci-fi vibe.
Dan Mora can explain some of the problems. This is fitting given that his work has influenced this particular other world.
Monty and Bonvillain offer a rich colour palette.
Carrie gives each character a unique character set.
One of the best Elseworlds DCs served over the years.
