Akihiro is a character who doesn’t get much play. With fewer banks than his world-famous father and fan favorite clone sisters, he is not a solo adventurer and is often kicked out to support or plot the device. He has his own (figic) demons beyond the concept and ratio of Wolverine umbrella, but without the right hook, he may not be able to find a platform to wrestle them.
Giving him his own literal demon may not have been the most obvious solution to his problem, but it is the right hook he needed. The concept of Helberin was originally a toss-away gimmick for crossover events, but has the right amount of dynamic to draw people into the book, but it doesn’t weigh enough to embrace readers without the ballast of the hero, powerfully driven to pilot the ship.

Hellverine Vol. 1: Lost Highways proves that combining two concerns is a smart call. Previous miniseries have made Akita believe he is at the forefront of occult government agencies, but this book is organized with the baggage that could bring, dropping us wisely on a solo journey. This gives Akihiro and the devil Bagraguru a more space for him to stretch his legs and concentrate on his own story.
These stories are sketched more clearly as Mephisto is drawn into being a big bad thing in the book. When Mephisto traditionally binds Ghost Rider characters to demons like Zarasos and other vengeful spirits, Bagragul serves a totally different purpose. The devil, who was a kind of sculptor of hell, has been applied as a kind of focus of hatred and mistrust. An important place in Akiba’s life has become an unforgettable place like a purpose, hellish. Akihiro is a totemic, with the aim of attracting anger and creating fear.

By drawing Akihiro in these places, you can refresh the character in the minds of the readers in the book and quickly outline for new readers about who he is and where he came from. The book focuses a little more on the hellish side, slowly deepening the myth of the larger Ghost Rider/Spirits. You’ll think Mephisto will learn not to empower the agents that clearly attract him, but this was his system of who knows how long.
Lost Highways is a book filled with more depth than you might at first promise. It clearly cares the character and inflates what might seem to burn the overly ridiculous core concept, Wolverine, into a rich and fascinating story.
