Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and deadlines all report that Tom King is writing a live-action Archie film. It will be produced for universal photography by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (in Spider-Man: Spider-Verse and its sequel), Emma Watts (former president of Paramount’s film group), and Archie Comics publisher Jon Goldwater.
Details of the plot are currently unknown, but Lord and Miller said in a statement: “We are fans of all the repetitions of Archie, Veronica, Betty and the gang. When we heard him take over Tom King’s classic material, we quickly thought it would make sense as an event film for all our audiences.
Although Archie has previously appeared in the film, the 1990s TV film Archie: To Riverdale and Back To Back features 2002 Archie’s Weird Mysteries spin-off of Jugman’s Archies, and 2022 Indian Netflix releases Archies, marking the character’s big screen appearance since the 1941 debut of Pep Comics #22. The only theatrical film based on Archie’s cartoons came to this until it became (probably) the 2001 cult classic Josie and Pussycat. The news also comes two years after the end of CW’s Riverdale. This is often strange, darker, more edged.
King has a history with Archie and wrote 2024 One-Shot Archie: The Decision. This lured readers with his long-standing love interest between his two, a teenage promise that they were ultimately chosen between Betty and Veronica. His previous film/TV writings include Ava Duvernay’s minor New Gods Movie and his services at Brain Trust at DC Studios. He co-written/produced next year’s DC/HBO series lanterns and includes upcoming Animated Mister Miracle Show, based on the comics he created alongside Mitch Gerads.
Can Lord and Miller take the helm of the film? The pair’s next film as director, Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi adventure project Hail Mary, is currently scheduled to appear in theaters on March 20, 2026, and Miller will also be directing the film version of the non-fiction Covid-19 book The Preminion. In the meantime, while waiting to see if the film will come true, another film based on King’s writing, Supergirl, will arrive on June 26, 2026.
