Hobtown Mystery Story returns this year to its third graphic novel entitled “The Secret of the Saucer.” The first volume published by Oni Press, author Chris Bertine and artist Alexander Forbes created a series of graphic novels that are eerie, charming and impossible to put on. Bertine and Forbes were childhood friends, and as adults, they learned some separate artistic fields in order to create a community.
Teaming up with colorists Jason Fisher Kouch, Bertine and Forbes continues to explore a quirky little town that has been haunted by a series of unknown phenomena for centuries. From missing men to secret society of strange rituals with conspiracy and crime, Hobtown is a special place. At the heart of it is a group of teenagers who gather together to save the town and uncover the truths their parents had held from them for the rest of their lives.
Sierra Hahn of ONI Press Editor-in-Chief said this about the book.
Imagine A24 remakes Stranger Things and begins to understand the strange and surreal ambitions made by Chris Bertine and artist Alexander Forbes. There are ragtag groups of multi-generational mysteries, supernatural minimen and teenage detectives. I really love this series. Hobtown’s mystery story may be the best secret of the manga. These graphic novels are personal obsessions for me and will soon be for you too.

Meanwhile, Bess Pallares, senior editor at ONI Press, said:
What’s fun about Hobtown’s mystery stories is how each volume enhances and deepens the series’ bigger myths, while also serving as an independent reading experience that digs holes in the brain. Case of a Missing Person in Volume 1, Horror of the Boarding School in Volume 2, Flying Disc in Volume 3 – the first all-new Hobtown book published by Onipress. Chris and Alex created a world of intrigues in a quaint small town that is surprisingly rich. I guarantee you will come back for the rest so you can start the series with any volume you like.
Hobtown’s Mystery Story: The secrets of the saucer, the line between plot and reality is more intertwined than ever during the town’s highly contested mayoral elections. The arrival of unexplained, unidentified flying objects, the chaotic lord of apes, and the literal outbreak of rear thinking all threaten the small town and its inhabitants. High school teen detective clubs should be at the forefront of cases, but as detectives become increasingly uneasy about the situation surrounding them, they are filled with conflict and a crisis of leadership of their own. Is there anyone they can trust?
Hobtown Mystery Story: The Saucer’s Secret includes a homage to visionary filmmaker and artist David Lynch, who passed away earlier this year and whose storytelling has had a major impact on many of the stories Bertine and Forbes are creating.
Hobtown Mystery Story Preview: The Secret of the Saucer can be seen below. Graphic novels can now be pre-ordered from local comic shops and most major bookstores.
