Marvel revisits one of the most groundbreaking X-Men stories to date in X-Men of Apocalypse, a six-shot event series written by Jeff Roeb, the architect behind the original saga, featuring art by Eisner nominated Simone Di Meo. Released in September with the X-Men from Apocalypse Alpha #1 and wrapped in Omega #1 this December, the series creates an entirely new chapter, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the legendary 90s crossover.
Today, Marvel revealed four covers of the X-Men from Apocalypse #1, which arrived in November. Simone Di Meo teases the long-awaited return of X-Man, aka Nate Gray. Arthur Adams offers impressive covers highlighting the intricate triangles of Rogue, Magneto and Gambit, but the upstart Fan Yang boldly features Blink, one of the breakout characters from the original event. And on a major homecoming, Joe Madureila is one of the decisive artists of the first era of the Apocalypse, returning to the franchise for the first time in decades in the cover of a powerful storm. Madirayra offers variant covers for all issues of the event, including a special Virgin Edition.
The interests will not be high. In Apocalypse #1 X-Men, readers will finally see the long-standing conflict: The Apocalypse X-Men against the Spooky X-Men. Picking up in the aftermath of the original crossover’s explosive finale, this new series follows the Apocalypse’s surviving X-Men era, where they travel across Marvel universes to save a crumbling reality, and end up in direct conflict with their classic counterparts.
Di Meo expressed both excitement and pressure when he spoke to Chris Hassan on the X-Men on Monday. That’s because he stepped into such an iconic story. “We’re really fortunate to work on this project, but there are times when we’re under pressure for this reason because a lot of people know Jeff’s work and we need to do our best to make something special with him,” he told AIPT.
Robe emphasized the importance of bringing Nate Gray back into the spotlight. “The age of the Apocalypse is not perfect without X-Man! I’m excited to return to Mutantkind’s biggest psychic powerhouse, where his house universe is caught between two worlds as it collides with his current world!”
The X-Men in Apocalypse Alpha #1 lands on September 3rd, with subsequent chapters being released monthly until December. Pre-orders are currently available at comic shops everywhere.
