DC Comics and Marvel is set to crossover for the first time in decades next month with the release of Deadpool/Batman, a Marvel Publishing one-shot written by Zeb Wells and illustrated by Greg Capullo. DC is proceeding with the lawsuit in November for its own Batman/Deadpool one-shot, and today the publisher revealed details of the grandeur of the Dan Maura illustrations created by Grant Morrison, including the characters and creators of the backup story in question.
Honestly, DC’s PR for this captures a rather specific and fun tone, so we’ll let it speak for itself:
What happens when the world’s largest detective meets Merck with his mouth? Reality collapses into itself. Archetypes collide. Darkseid is. And somewhere between Apokolips and Earth-Trn666, a street named Danny Hums shows a song about the Crusades’ Cape!
But DC’s Batman/Deadpool #1 is not a comic book crossover between iconic publishers, but a metaphysical car accident between two storytelling philosophies. One character is cracked in the shadows of trauma and justice. Other cart wheels pass through chaos, breaking down the fourth wall, and sometimes breaking the laws of physics. Together, they are forced to not only endanger their world, but also confront the threat of questioning its existence as a fictional structure.
With the main storyline by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora, Batman/Deadpool #1 launches the equal parts of reality bending saga, a horror of the universe, a slapstick noir and metafiction therapy session. It’s a kind of comic book that knows it’s a comic book, and I enjoy being a comic book, and I weaponize that comic book booklet and dare to continue reading anyway!
And yes, there is an owl. There is a blade. I have blood. There’s a huge typewriter!
look? It’s concrete and fun. It appears that Morrison is taking advantage of the opportunity to write Deadpool to dig deep into some of their favorite storytelling topics. I’m here for that.
Beyond the main story description, DC has also revealed a quartet of backup stories to reunite past characters and fan favorite creators in one shot. Here is this information and the corresponding variant covers of three of the four stories:
Comic legends clash when Scott Snyder, James Tinion IV and Joshua Williamson join forces with Hayden Sherman and the charming Constantine meets the Doctor Strange Saga.
Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo offer a motor, emotionally recharged encounter between Nightwing (Dick Grayson) and Wolverine (Laura Kinney).
Tamaki and Amanda Connor unleash their charisma and charisma in Harley Quinn vs. Hulk Showdown.
G. Willow Wilson and Dennis Cowan electrify the page with a high-voltage story starring Static and Ms. Marvel.
DC also delivered a volley of variant covers from top creators, featuring an even more imagined crossover between DC and Marvel characters.
