Rick Remender (The Scumbag, Grommets) and Kieron Dwyer (Sea of Red, Captain America) are bringing back their chaotic skatepunk creator Billy Billy in their limited edition 25th anniversary hardcover this December. This black and white deluxe edition collects a wealth of bonus material, including the full run of the originals of anarchic cult comics, as well as content you’ve never seen before and a brand new second half by Remender written in late-night nostalgia haze.
First published in 1999, Black Heart Billy follows a robot head, deep hatred for authority, and a rebellious skatepunk with filters. As Mad Nazi scientists try to revive Adolf Hitler using Jerry Garcia’s body, Billy’s world of punk rock, sky pools and ironic commentary changes drastically. Only Billy can get in the way as San Francisco wobbles at the edge of the fascist hippie doom.
Dwyer thought about their wild creative process. “Rick was working with me on My Silent Humor Comics LCD: Lowest Comic Denominator, and when he showed me a sketch of Black Heart Billy, we knew it didn’t push all the boundaries it could find.
Remender states, “The characters mean no more to me than Billy. The book came from the heart of the punk scene I grew up in. It was raw, absurd, made of love, and I had no money.”
Black Heart Billy 25th Anniversary Deluxe Hardcover (ISBN: 9781534333260) will attack comic shops on Wednesday, December 17th and arrive at bookstores and online retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble, on Tuesday, December 30th.
