Reading weekly comics can feel like you’re running in a loop, and you can see the same story concept redoing over and over again in a slightly tweaked way, but the list of top comics to buy this week on August 6th is against that. Books like Ancestral Recall and Orla find themselves fresh and surprising. It feels like even the Hell, the new DC Comics series, Cheetah and Cheshire Rob Justice League, is trying to do something we’ve never seen before.
Yeah, it’s become a surprising week for the new #1 and I dug it. As always, you can find my top 5 recommendations below, as well as a set of regular release lists. And once again, if you enjoy my weekly comic recon, I wrote a horror comic.
Top Comics to Buy on August 6th
Ancestor Recall #1
Author: Jordan Clark
Artist: Atagun Ilhan
Colorist: Pippa Bowran
Letter: Rob Steen
Publisher: Ahoy Comics
Black History: For painter Melvin Walling, it’s a real superpower! When Melvin’s wife mysteriously disappears, he must call on the most important black figure of all time to help him search.
Why Cool: Ancestor Recall is a book about a non-attractive superpower that is also a kind of chronic mystery that gives the story a great mystical engine, couples who are also immersed in black history, living artistic lives, and a kind of chronic mystery that gives the story a great mystical engine. As mentioned in my intro, when you read so many weekly comics, things can start to feel the same, but I have never seen anything like ancestor recalls. I can’t wait to see what else these creators have.

Cheetah and Cheshire Rob Justice League #1
Author: Greg Racka
Artist: Nicola Scott
Colorist: Annette Kwok
Letter: Troy Peter
Publisher: DC Comics
Bold robbers on the safest facilities in DCU! Cheetah and Cheshire assemble a team of inconformity and strange balls to separate the impossible. Standing between them, what separates the boldest robbers in history are some minor complications, including the most sophisticated orbital platform ever built, an AI-driven security system, and the smartest and most powerful heroes in the DCU.
Why Cool: The creative team of Rucka and Scott here have worked together on DC’s Rebirth Wonder Woman Run, which is familiar and loved by the DC Universe. As the title reveals, it is also the story of a robber featuring two villains who are probably unlikely to have found their own book. But for my money, the Center is one of the things that made the DC Comic Line extremely interesting and strong. The book also makes great use of the current state of Justice League watchtowers. It stands well in itself as the opening chapter of the robbery, but it also adds interest to those who are currently reading other DC books.
Price: $3.99
Daredevil: A Cold Day in Hell #3
Author: Charles Saul
Artist: Steve McNiven
Colorist: Dean White
Letter: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics
The 10-year Daredevil Project reaches its grand conclusion. When NYC gets dark, who will stand up with Daredevil? Would you like to do it?
Why it’s cool: This is the best Daredevil comic for years and it’s really said a lot. Set in a war-torn dystopian future, this book feels a little higher than just another old superhero book. It is meditative and thoughtful. But perhaps most importantly, it features a Dean White colored Steve McNiven Art. From the first page of the first issue, the book is one of the best superhero comics of the year. And now, after a little late, we got that epic finale. I’ll go into this in more detail in tomorrow’s Marvel Rundown column.
Price: $6.99
Orla #1
Author: John Leeds
Artist: Sally Cantirino
Colorist: Dearbhla Kelly
Letter: Lucas Gattoni
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
Orla Bard is an antique restoration company, fun and enthusiastic Birder in romance novels. She also believes in true love and continues to navigate Seattle’s single scene despite repeated disappointments. But the aura has a secret. She suffers from Ick, the monster being that eats the people who live within her, and she shows up violently whenever she gets too angry or fears. Aura, unable to remove herself from this curse, uses ICK to save other women by removing the strictest men from the dating pool. Your mind (and body) breaks with this quirky Romcom/Creature-Feature Mashup!
Why It’s Cool: Like the Recall of Ancestors, this is a singular book I’ve never actually seen anything close to the market directly. It’s a horror romance comic and as our hero has a monster inside her, she unleashes the scary man who takes her on a date. And I mean like a really bad person. Thus, Aura reads like a dissection of some of the most toxic behaviors that men engage in in 2025. It was bloody, funny and surprising, and I exploded with it. It also looks good.

The Ultimate Wolverine #8
Author: Chris Condon
Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio
Colorist: Brian Barenza
Letter: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Wolverine vs. The ultimate angel! Opposition parties are infiltrating facilities that hold a group of powerful mutants! And in Winter Soldier Handlers there is an ominous plot to completely destroy the opposition…
Why it’s cool: As I wrote in my personal rankings of this space and 2025’s best comics (so far), Ultimate Wolverine is also a great job of offering this alternative reality version of the familiar X-Men characters. That’s certainly what we got at this week’s Ultimate Wolverine #8. This is a tense penetration story that quickly turns into fear, pondering deeper contemplation of red.
Price: $4.99
