Oni Press has announced its carbon-based Kickstarter campaign: The Art of Lewis Larosa, and The Beat have all the details.

Since Luis Larosa made his comic debut over a quarter century ago, he has become one of the most well-known artists in the industry. Carbon Base is his first career retrospective, featuring over 250 pages of character designs, rarely seen covers and concept sketches from publishers such as Marvel and Valiant.

“It’s happening, guys! Thanks to the incredible people at Oni Press, I have a retrospective of my art in the oven for over 20 years,” Larosa said. “What an incredible honour. From my early days when I launched Punisher Max to my years of helping to reboot the brave universe, this one lovely book will show you some of my best works. Inspire you to pick up a pencil and draw it!”

Carbon Base: Luis LaRosa’s art appears in the hardcover version of Kickstarter’s dense, foil stamps. Beat can only reveal the cover art shown below.

“Leave it to my tendencies, approaching covering is to make the most impact. I often zone out, close my eyes, try to visualize the scene. I play scenes in my head and move the camera to find the most exciting moments, POCs, compositions. Environment,” LaRosa said in Beat’s exclusive statement.

“I create some loose graffiti that manipulates the numbers, and try to find the most dynamic poses at the peak of the action, and balance it with fun silhouettes, while positioning and rearranging the elements of the scene, and repositioning them to fit like a puzzle. With the exception of the guide image, the pieces need to be reworked, sometimes thrown completely. Larosa continued.

“We want viewers to feel the image on their fingers. Thinking about lights and dark darkness, we try to develop a hierarchy of value to maximize weight, solidity, depth of the field and readability. We add dinosaurs, avoiding hope, while maintaining a tense image. Dinosaurs make everything better.”

In addition to the book itself, Kickstarter backers can claim exclusive run signing and slipcase versions of the deluxe portfolio set, featuring Larosa’s most memorable brave covers, t-shirts and more. The full slate of rewards will be revealed when the campaign begins next month.

“When it comes to Luis Larosa, “huge talent” seems like a Titanic’s understatement. We are proud to have gathered the artwork between the two covers that lead to a comprehensive career spanning Lewis’s artwork. Golinson.

“To be able to work directly with Lewis in this unique collection, it is an honor to shine a spotlight on his unique position in the comic book great Pantheon,” he added.
