Dark Horse Comics has announced American Caper, a 12-shot crime series from Abside Ventures, a new company of Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser. American Caper, written by Houser and Lazlow as Art by David Lapham and Chris Anderson, is a satire after “two families completely normal and completely damaged in the world of corrupt business, inappropriate politics, hanging crime, self-righteous justice and problematic leisure wear.”

We are chasing the fate of two neighbors at the point of collapse. Mormon hitman and gambling addiction lawyer are both intertwined with real estate transactions. Added to the mix are the beautiful Mexican queens on the run from her past, two fugitive prisoners, a Wall Street billionaire who has become a cowboy, and a maniac hell succumbing to revenge. From tax evaders in the groomed wilderness in Wyoming to the thought police in Brooklyn to the chaotic political battlefields of Florida, one thing is for sure. This tragedy is someone else’s fault.
Hauser states, “American Capers are based on my lifelong appeal to hypocrites, sociopaths, political idiots, dysfunctional families, and violence. Dark, morally ambiguous, and extremely vulgar, and we hope that it is the comic of the confused world we live in now.” The book marks the first cartoon of Arbition Ventures, founded by Hauser a year after he left Rockstar in 2020. This is the second comic by a British writer following the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series, following the Max Payne 3 Prequel (Sam Lake by Art With Fernando Blanco), published by Marvel in 2012.
Lasslow, making his comic debut here, has also contributed to the GTA, Red Dead and Mac Spain games as a writer and actor (it depicts a fictionalized version in GTA), and the book is edited by character designs by Simon Bisley, colours by Leelafridge, lettering by Nat Piecos, and edited by Shelley Bond and Daniel Chabon. Lazlow is joking. “When I told my child, who grew up in Oklahoma, headed to New World Comics every Wednesday, that he would be making comics to work with legendary editor Shelley Bond and visual storytelling genius David Raffam, he said, “Who is this strange middle-aged guy hanging outside the comic book store?”
“We’re looking forward to seeing you in the future,” said Mike Richardson, CEO of Dark Horse. “I know Grand Theft Auto since its early release. The legendary properties of Dunhauser and Laslow Jones and creative contributions to the video game industry are common. Chabon said, “The editing of the American Capers was a complete thrill. This book won’t draw a punch. I can’t wait for readers to jump in.”
The first issue will be released on November 12th at Comic Book Store. Meanwhile, Ashkan’s, T-shirts and other items will be available at the Dark Horse booth (#2615) at San Diego Comic Con this weekend.
