Aquaman #7 review

Since the opening of this new DC All-in Aquaman series, Jeremy Adams has skillfully set many questions for readers to keep in mind. When does Aquaman become “God’s Murderer” and what does that mean? Why did Dagon steal not only Atlantis, but Aquaman’s family and friends, whisper into the mysterious water realm known as Blue? What did Dagon do to Mera? I’m happy to report that I’m starting to answer these questions with this new question.

DC

In the final issue, we received a revelation that Than of the Wonder Twins was in a mysterious water container. Adams wastes no time adding him to the crew. The problem begins with a band of adventurers attacking Dagon’s army and trying to infuriate him. This title was by no means short of great behaviour, but Zan adds some lightness and charm that he had previously lacked. I’d like to see how long he’s been with this title.

DC

After their attack, the entire crew returns to the Nautilus and talks about their next steps. They then jump straight and reach the people of Aquaman, “when”. This required a bit of tail spin as I tried to remember how they knew the location. Did Adams get confused and fast forward on the plot? After that I went back and found it in No. 5. There, Nemo saw a woman with red hair, with dangerous depths.

DC

Upon reaching there, Aquaman rushes to Mera and discovers that the person he thought from afar was his wife is in fact his daughter Andrina. Grey-haired Garth and Jackson appear to greet Aquaman, and the realization is about how long it’s been since everything was taken. Before Aquaman goes to his wife, he gets some attitude from Andrina and I can’t blame her. He is promoted for her life as this hero, but all she knows is that she has failed to protect and save his people.

It’s amazing to see how old she is when Aquaman and Andrina make a way to see Mera. Mera dies and her last words beg Aquaman to bring her daughter home so that she doesn’t fight Dagon because he is God. Unfortunately, all this unfolds and Dagon arrives just as Aquaman and his daughter are ready to fight the next issue.

I think it’s funny to saddle Aquaman with her daughter who has a tip on her shoulder, but I don’t know how she feels about Mera’s death. Of course, she could always come back (it’s a comic after all), but do you think this would turn her over? If Dagon is defeated, can you undo all this? Will Garth, Jackson and Andrina return to their previous ages? These questions leave me excited and strange feeling as Mera was Aquaman’s rock for so long.

This issue was dealt with once more by Michael Shelfer. Shelfer has proven to be skilled at putting this world under her pen, offering not only smooth action but also some great emotional pieces on the character’s face. The only complaint I have may be related to pacing, but there is the part where the dagon is heading towards a kind of spread-like ending with all these tendrils/tooth that I wanted to see more. I’m sure I’ll get it with the next question. I don’t mind Shelfer becoming a regular artist in the series.

Adams provides answers to reader questions when needed to hook again. But some of these answers made me feel uncertain. In any case, I would like to know where the fight will take the next issue and how long the impact of Dagon’s actions will last.

“Aquaman” #7 is the problem I’ve been waiting for

You can answer questions.

Some great action drawn by Shelfer.

The book seems to leave Aquaman in an interesting place, good or bad.

Andrina’s anxiety can add interesting wrinkles to things.

Zan adds some lightness.

Has Mera just calmed down? I don’t know how I feel…

I’m somewhat worried that Garth and Jackson are considering a sudden aging.
