Every week there’s a real horny that hits the stands of new comics. Readers often know exactly what they are most interested in (they have their pull lists sitting in the reliable hands of comic shops), but they are sometimes told about opposing that old trim and judging the book by its cover.
Some truly amazing cover art hits every week. These were the ones that caught Colin’s eye for the week of July 9th, 2025.
Batman and Robin #23
Variants by Rafael de Latorre
Here, like Damian, it’s a joy to see the simple pose fully capture the overall atmosphere of the character. There’s something about him hanging down that makes him hanging down. I also love this costume design’s commitment to sneakers.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – League of Justice #1
Variant by Bill Sienkiewicz
When that happens, you have to celebrate sienkiewicz. Artists who can strike the perfect balance of moody abstractions can attack in the way traditional buildings can. There isn’t much here to suggest that this is Gotham due to Gaslight situations. This could be an old Gothic part of Gotham, but it speaks to the timeless nature of the characters.
Blood type #2
Cover by Miguel Mercado
As if swimming in the ocean wasn’t scary enough, now there are vampires who ruin the relaxation of the seaside. The expression of this Mercado work is the most memorable aspect. It’s a real shock and fear, not because people, and merely places, are troubled by sharks.
I hate Fairyland #42
Cover by Derek Raufman
I think we can all get behind the adorable powers of unicorn hellboy and the supernatural darkness. Derek Raufman really nails the entire aesthetic of Mignola born.
Magik #7
Variant by Joe Quinones
These retro vision covers really nail it. This is a great blend of modern and classics. Kitty’s puffy jacket is familiar to fans of classic stories, and the appearance of Illana’s modern buckles and shoulder pads is fresh. I love the incredibly wide and thick Souldsword of modern times.
Marvel Swimsuit Special: Friends, Enemies, Rivals #1
Variant by Russel Dauterman
Phoenix brand bikini bottom. This season, the trends in real hot (not intended as a pun) beachwear. I love how Deuterman added a lovely homage to the long sash in the original costume.
Red Hulk #6
Variants by Michael and Laura Allred
Another retro vision cover, this leaned against Allred’s pop art Kirbyism. Allred felt like an artist who existed everywhere in the history of comics and never felt out of place. Although exceptional, it is not discordant in the medium.
Trans #22
Variants by Simon Par
The design of these modern transformers is very smooth. All sharp lines and elegantly engineered curves. I also love the colour interactions of this cover.
