Hihi Studio is kicking things from its first production called Bad Inflience.
Contrary to that title, it has no negative impact. This sci-fi thriller marks the first collaboration of Hihi Studio, a manga and anime-focused company founded by Valkyrae and Kai Gayoso, as well as other productions at the startup studio. The story is written by Orson James and Rome Curry and by Joll Ross.
Below is the early concept art of the main character, “a real mix of outsiders, f-ups, and ne’er do wells, and in their own way, agreed to their place in the world.”
Set in a surveillance city called Weishorn, people are distracted by laughing at mascots and parades. Oswald, the leader of Weishorn, likes theater and the hunger that controls people. The story follows a woman named Nell, troubled by her past, joins the rebel gang and joins the rebel gang to defeat the system. But as she digs deeper, things begin to unravel and nothing means anything. And soon, if Nell isn’t careful, she will lose her grip on reality and herself.
With both writers putting up a large number of imports to build a fully realized world, it’s no surprise that Weisshorn’s Bad Inflations settings were created with a very high level of attention and care. James describes it as “a broad dystopia where control is claimed through entertainment.” He said, “The system doesn’t just rule with fear. It distracts, glares, scripts, through spectacles. How bad is it if everyone is smiling? It’s a surveillance state decorated as a theme park.”
Rebellion is more than simply overthrowing the system. Also, narratively, it serves as Nell’s self-discovery. “She is trying to understand who is under the forced role. Life at Weishorn is a mess of lies and trauma, and Nell is ready to break out. But she is not the chosen one.” “She feels lost and confused. Nell carries herself like a fighter, but behind it is a young woman patching a crack of doubt and anxiety with stubbornness and pure will. And in this world, holding it together may be the most radical act.”
ROS similarly described NEL as someone trying to find her place in her world, a world she has no connection to. “I think everyone can see a part of themselves within themselves,” he said. “After all, their stories are summarised to those trying to understand things in a ruthless world that doesn’t stop you screaming, and it can always attract your full attention.”
Valkirae praises the bad influence, calling it “strange, wild, heart-filled.” She encouraged people to read it by saying, “Even if you’ve never read a comic in your life, or you trust me, if you start scrolling (through bad influence), you’ll be hooked.”
The first three poorly influenced episodes are currently appearing on the webtoon. There, subsequent episodes are updated every Thursday.
