Predator vs. Spider-Man #3 may seem to continue a single story, but it is actually three separate threads at a time. Peter Parker has to fight against a trio of trioes that have invaded the daily trumpet. Kraven The Hunter follows Skinner’s path and does not realize that Yautza, who invaded him and Bugle, share the same goal. Mary Jane Watson works to stay one step ahead of Skinner. This is said to be better than saying, especially when she pats in the middle of the hideout. It works… most of the time.
Skinner is the guy driving all the events, but still only exists in a single page of Predator vs. Spider-Man #3. Worse, it’s a penultimate issue, but it feels like there are more stories Benjamin Percy is holding back. Why was Skinner exiled from the Yautja Society? How does MJ get away with that clutch? There’s one more question in particular, so how does it all come together? Something like this would hope Percy has five problems instead of four. He has weaved in interesting stories so far, but he needs more space to tell.
That being said, I don’t deny that Predator vs Spider-Man #3 is a gorgeous looking book. Marcelo Ferrelia offers hell of opening sequences as a panel featuring Yautzya who has invaded the Daily Trumpet, Peter’s panel safely acquires Jameson and then turns into a Spider-Mantog. Jay Leisten adds many textures to Ferreria’s work through his ink, highlighting the characters and environment. You can see the curves of the armor of the predator, the wear of the concrete jungle in New York, and the thickness of the blood being washed away. Frank Dalmata’s colour art, vibrant tints of brinig up to a very hot night, and Clayton Cowles bring uneasy effects like the screeching of numerous rats, leading to one of the more disturbing images.
Amazing
The real standout for Predator vs. Spider-Man #3 is the match between the Spidey and Yautja trio. In other words, this comic is finally enduring its name. Ferrelia draws high-pitched, bloody battles, making great use of Spidey’s agility and Yautja’s various weapons. Spidie jumps up and down on a razor blade, plasma caster and spear. But what I really love is that Yautja is almost silent. If someone says, “What happens if Spider-Man fights a predator?”, that’s the exact type of battle you’ll expect.
Predator vs. Spider-Man #3 relies primarily on the intense action sequence as you might expect to see, to cover the fact that its plot is a bit thin. I hope all the pieces come together in the final issue, especially as Benjamin Percy plans to increase things with the Predator.
