Another victory for Luz as his graphic novel Deux became Nues (Tr. ‘Two Girls Nude’) became the fourth winner of Elle France’s annual comic award.

Deux watches Nues (Tr. ‘Two Girls Nude’), Luz (Albin Michel) by Two Girls Nude, a march in history from the perspective of Otto Mueller’s paintings. From 1919, the story traces the chain of ownership of objects and the dark society around them, uniquely in terms of the objects themselves, during the 20th century.

The book, published by Albin Michel, has attracted immense critical acclaim in France. He won the Fauve d’or for Best Book award at Angouleme 2025, the grand prize from the French Association of Comic Critics and Journalists (Grand Prix de la Critique acbd), and the Le Point Magazine’s annual comic award.

In an article following last night’s announcement, Elle said (translated by Deepl):

“In Deux Filles Nues, cartoonist Luz slips into the eyes of expressionist paintings banned by the Nazis to talk about the changes in the 20th century.

Luz aka Renald Luzier is a former cartoonist of the satirical news magazine Charlie Hebdo. He is one of a handful of graduates who joined the realm of graphic novels following the attacks in Paris offices in 2015. He remains a cartoonist who produces satirical works for other French publications. His 2018 graphic novel Indelevilles (tr. ‘Indelibles’) goes back in time when he worked for Charlie Hebd.

The nude of two girls beat 19 competitors on a rather packed list of nominees, including a spinoff of future Arab, Moyfadi (tr. ‘i,fadi’) of his hugely successful autobiography series. And Aude Picault’s latest graphic novel is a follow-up 20 years after her acclaimed autobiographical debut, Moi JE: Quarantine (tr. ‘me, i: Quarantine’).

This was the fourth year of El Grand Prix BD that began in 2022. Previous winners include Dessiner Encore (Tr. “Drawing Again”) by Coco (Les Arènes). le poids deshéros (tr. ‘Heroes of Heroes’) by David Sala (Casterman); La Dernière Lane (The Last Queen) by Jean Marc Rochette. Last year’s winner was an adaptation of Manu Lalcenet’s Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, published by Dalgar in France and released in English by Abrams Comicart.

Elle’s literary and comic prizes are chosen by a combination of experts and readers’ jury. Critics select a list of candidates with winners voted by the Elle Readers panel.
