Idw Publishing yesterday announced (via the Hollywood Reporter) that James T. Kirk is on another mission that no one has ever been to Star Trek. Released this September, this new Star Trek Universe series is just in time to witness the collapse of the starry sky he once cherished, as he watches legendary Captain Kirk make an unexpected return from the dead.

According to IDW:

This epic comic book series takes place during burns. This caused the destruction of any active warpcore, killed billions, and shattered peace, stability, enlightenment and mutual protection of the United Federation of Planets, which was provided for seven centuries. Faced with the true wild west of the universe, the mysteriously resurrected Captain Kirk leads new crews and ships in seemingly impossible efforts to support the mission of Starfleet unity across the universe.

For beginners, burns are a fierce event that occurred in the 31st century and is central to the third season of Star Trek Storyline: Discovery. Burns were a galaxy-wide disaster caused by Skull, a genetically altered child of Kelpien. Skulls are born and raised on a dilithium-rich planet and have unique connections to material for hotel exposure. When his mother dies, intense emotions experience the skull, almost every dilithium in the galaxy suddenly becomes unstable, causing an explosive subspace resonance.

Burns destroy the most active warp-capable ships across the galaxy, wiping out the United Federation’s planetary federation, essentially the governing body of the starry sky. As seen in the discovery, burns completely alter the political power structures of the galaxy, leading to isolationism and chaos in many worlds.

But what does Captain Kirk want with his burns?

“The only familiar face is one that we never expected in this era: Captain James T. Kirk.” “William Shatner’s iconic performance transcends boundaries. Kirk is one of the great characters in the modern fiction canon with timeless actors. He was also the first Star Trek character we’ve ever written. Consuming his entire legacy.”

“Forget everything you know about Star Trek,” said Ranzing in a press release. “The final spaceship is a new crew, a new era, a completely different tone. Our aim is to be literary, intense, innovative, and more than anything, accessible.

The AIZN-nominated author stated, “Long-standing trekking fans will have a deeply engaging reading experience. This is a pivotal moment in trekking history.
