Red Hood makes DCs over 17 in the Continuing Series new and new

Jason Todd is attacking himself in vengeance. DC has announced its new DC, Red Hood, which debuts in September. The continuation series by author Gretchen Felker Martin, artist Jeff Spokes and letter Becca Carey is aimed at readers age 17 and over, and promises to bring Jason back to his violent anti-hero roots.

Here’s how DC explains the red hood:

New Angelrik, a city owned by corruption, appears to be the perfect place for red hoods to take root. There is crime, evil and agitation everywhere. When Jason discovers a super-powerful serial killer targeting city police, he finds himself sucked into a deadly plot that appears to have no end.

But Jason isn’t the only one on the scene. His trail is followed by Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress. Is she here to stop him, or will she join his crusades? What happens when two black sheep from the Bat Family start working together?

The debut issue of the series features spokes and variant covers with Jim Lee (Order Open), Brian Boland (Order Open), Jerry (Order Open), Kyuyon Ohm (Order Open), Nick Robless (1:25 Incentive).

Red Hood is Jason Todd’s latest ongoing series since Jason Todd returned from his death in 2004. DC appears to be struggling to find the location of Jason, who first returned as a villain before folding into the Butt Family during the new 52 reboot. Between Robbins’ abundance and Jason’s tendency to kill the villain, sending him to a new city himself seems like a wise move, as the character couldn’t carve out his own niche in Gotham. From its explanation, the new Angelique could potentially allow for the red hood what Brudehaven was for Nightwing when featured in his first ongoing solo series.

Red Hood is the first ongoing DC series for author Rebecca Felker-Martin, and has previously contributed stories about issues with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, as well as the 2024 DC Pride Anthology issue. This is Jeff Spokes’ latest DC work, and most recently described the black label Jenny Sparks series with author Tom King.

In a statement announcing the new series, Felker Martin and the spokes explained that they are helping Red Hood’s latest outing.

“Sweat, blood, powder burning. Fractures and mental control. A city that has been looped from within,” Felker Martin said. “Jason is hunting for a mysterious telepath and going through hell. He’s taking us there and we’re excited to lead this new Red Hood run along with Jeff’s spoke.”

“The red hood is rough, bloody, sexy and peeling,” the spokes said. “Gretchen’s writing is a well-made blend of superhero and pulp noir, all with a New Orleans flavor background.”

Series editor Arianna Turturro also speaks at length about what the series has for Jason.

“Red Hood is a coalition story that Jason Todd fans have been waiting for,” said DC editor Arianna Turturro. “It offers high-stakes action, engaging mystery and raw, acquiescence storytelling. Every element of the book highlights the core aspects of Jason’s character: his difficulties in personal connections, his bad training, his gloomy enthusiastic, and his approach to violent heroes.

“Jason is not a regular anti-hero who does his own way and does nothing and doesn’t feel anything,” Tarturro continued. “He’s an exposed nerve, an unprotected beating heart, assaulting the violence he survived in both his world and himself. Helena has a deep understanding of where Jason came from.

“Red Hood is a mature, richly layered Jason Todd series that gives the long-standing exiles of the Bat Family a place to truly shine,” concluded Turturro. “Jason is going to crack down on doing things in his own words in his city, and we need to read the series to see what that will turn out. But let’s say we’re not pulling punches.

Check out the variant covers of the first issue by Bolland, Jae Lee, Kyu and Robles. Recommended for readers age 17 and above, Red Hood #1 arrives in store and digital on Wednesday, September 10th. Collected editions of #1-6 and #7-12 arrive at stores in June 2026 and December 2026, respectively, followed by others as the series continues.
