Screenwriter Ernie Altbacker has had the opportunity in his career for so many well-known projects, particularly in a variety of DC animated films, including the adaptation of the Fanfare Storyline, including Justice League DAR: The Apocolips War and Teen Titan. Despite his past qualifications and love for comics, he has few opportunities to work in the medium itself, except for a few small projects and short stories here and there. It all changed when Altbacker, along with his collaborator and illustrator Josh White, launched his first comic Kickstarter project at Area 51 Studios.
“Douglas Adams is said to be in a pinch with a Monty Python and meet a black man.” Area 51 Studios imagines an infamous, secret government site as a plot of studios where aliens come to film galaxy reality shows. As Altbacker revealed in his Kickstarter description, the story began as a TV program pitch that his (previous) agents clearly didn’t want to take on. Eventually he turned the idea into a novel, and now the world is ready to see it in the form of a cartoon.
Kickstarter was launched earlier this month, and Beat was able to catch up with Altbacker about his first campaign. In our conversation, prolific writers discussed writing for another medium, not only learning to run crowdfunding campaigns. Additionally, Altbacker provided thoughts and opinions on the current state of the entertainment industry, particularly animation, and how he was tailored and adapted to the fluid state of modern media.
