Artist Writers and Artisans (AWA) bring fans back to yellow brick roads with the announcement of the ultimate Oz universe: Vol. 1 The Lost Lands is L. It is a graphic novel that incorporates Frankbaum’s famous works and builds it by exploring lesser known characters and environments. Multi-Grammy Award-winning artist Elton John writes his foreword on both trade paperbacks and hardcover editions.
“The Magic of Oz has been influential throughout the life of legendary musician Elton John, from his childhood to his inspiration for the iconic song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” the publisher’s press release shares. “Promising to shed light on stories that defend others and lift up others, Elton John is now helping to pave the universe’s future in Oz, writing the preface to AWA and creators’ powerhouse team – The Ultimate OZ Universe: Vol. 1 The Lost Lands.”
Co-authored by award-winning author Karen Van and songwriter Larry King, the book features artwork by Mike Deodato Jr., the colours of Ive Svulcina, and letters from Steve Wans. Fans are looking for even more surprises. The graphic novel includes QR codes, original music, maps and behind the scenes features throughout the page that links to video footnotes.
AWA Chief Creative Officer Axel Alonso said: “We’ve seen The Wizard of Oz multiple times over the years, as well as millions of fans around the world. But Dorothy’s adventures with the scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the ward’s diseased lion are just a small slice of a complex universe that we haven’t studied first, that we’ve never started with lost lands, and we’ll show you the oz.
“Every moment in the book is precious, and I was captivated by the first article in the Ultimate Universe of Oz, celebrating the legacy of Baum’s genius and heritage of colour, unique characters, and victory of good,” Elton John wrote in an interview with people.
“I’m more committed than ever to bringing light to people and creators that lift others up.” “It’s great to see Love and Attention AWA. (Author) Larry King and my best friend (Broadway producer) Kevin McCollum are lavished on Baum’s book,” the musician continues.
“I’ve been obsessed with Baum’s work since I was a kid,” added Lostland songwriter and co-writer Larry King. “It was important to get all the details right, so it was a joy to work with Jay, Julie and Mike, the three of the world’s greatest historians of Oz. They are not trying to replace the stories that fans love, but are not trying to offer a new way to connect the dots.
This 144-page graphic novel is set for a November 12 release from AWA, distributed by Simon & Schuster, and you can back up Kickstarter here.
