Last summer, Dark Horse obtained a magic license. Currently, the publisher has announced its first new MTG series written by Dan Watters. We have released art by Owen Guieni, colours of Hilary Jenkins, and lettering by Clayton Cowles. Magic Title: The Gathering: Untold Stories—The Elspeth, No. 4 series tracks the human-turned Archangel Planeswalker Elspeth Tirel during an event beyond the death of the 2020 card set Theros.
Issue #1 Cover by Owen Jenni
Elspeth is dead. But her story is not over yet. Heliod, the sun god who grew up envious of his champion, struck her into the underworld. There, she is forced to relive the worst moments of her life forever. However, Elspeth does not submit to despair – she appears in a larger hero than before from each conflict. And what is death for a great hero like Elspeth?
The gathering at the Wizard of the Coast stated, “Elspeth’s journey has always resonated deeply with his fans, bringing her untold story back to life in this exciting new format.
Gieni said, “I am extremely honored to explain these wonderful characters and stories of lore. And Dan’s script is absolutely amazing, legally amazing. The only request he first gave was to portray some of those epic Theros gods and monsters.
The book marks the second MTG comic for Dark Horse after a 1998 miniseries by Mike Grell, Pop Man and Norman Lee collected under the name Gerrard’s Quest. Valiant Imprint’s praise committee held pre-licensing, releasing the first MTG comics in the 1990s, IDW Publishing, and Boom! The studio had it until the Dark Horse retrieved them. IDW also retained the rights to D&D before last year.
Issue #1 (4) will be released on September 10th, with the main cover being released by Gieni covers, with variations by Vincenzo Riccardi and Anna Steinbauer.
