Oni Press is first looking at Catacomb of Torment and preparing for a terrifying summer

Oni Press has had a huge success in reviving EC horror, leading to a new anthology and series that hopes to promote the legacy of legendary William Gaines and his groundbreaking work. As they prepare for their summer terror, the publisher is ready to exclusively see and share one of the stories featured in Torment #1’s new anthology comic catacombs. It is called the “Garden Type,” written by Matt Sint, drawn by David Raffam and colored by Nate Firaldi.

Catacomb of Torment features a new sadistic host cut from the same fabric as the previous fabric called The Tormentor. This seems to make him a little too excited when it comes to human anatomy. But to be fair, it doesn’t seem willing to carve out a bit of playtime here and there with strangely detached limbs. I think this is a requirement to qualify as an EC horror host.

Isn’t a horror anthology the perfect summer companion? As reading lists and book influencers try to start a five-book romantic series, a good shot of terror can feel the need to add darkness to that summer sun. Maybe they’ll even motivate a season’s full horror acquisition. Catacomb of Torment aims to do that accurately.

Press releases for the new series follow below, along with a preview page and all the nasty covers that will immerse you in the #1 release on July 16th (FOC: 6/23/2025). enjoy.

Behold: A bloody new ongoing series has been born! From the ashes of the inscription of Deep by, we are led by Tormentor, a new horror host with an unhealthy interest in human anatomy. Hold your head (if it’s still attached)… because no one can escape the catacombs of pain!

Storytellers John Alcudi (BPRD) & Patrick Piazarungo (No fear), Matt Kintoto (Brzrkr) & David Lapham (Strey Bullets), Marguerite Bennett (Batwoman) & Dan McDaid (Shazam!) each equip and gaze reck for the courage of Reck and Breister, who have three Mase and Blutal bravery. The tradition of immortal EC!

Plus, as an additional bonus: a surprising classic from EC Vaults, painstakingly remastered and newly restored to original colors. Critics have already said, “This is literal torture” and “Stop it!” Get this scary 40 pages first issue. And the suffering may consider letting them go!

The incredible horrors from Jorge Fornez (Rorschach, Danger Street), Tom Fowler (Mad Magazine, a head-filled refrigerator), Patricia Martin (GI Joe), Jay Stevens (Residence), Dustin Weaver (Avengers, Pacris) and the stunning carriage of these covers are sure to keep them in the middle of the night! Oni Press continues to remind us of the legacy of the infamous EC comics.
