An action-packed crime thriller based on Indonesian folklore and history.
This is the second time Batavia bandits have appeared in a crowdfunding roundup, and that’s good reason. Set in colonial Indonesia and inspired by local folklore, Batavia’s Bandits is a high-stakes martial arts comic that blends mysticism, political intrigue and raw emotions. At its heart, it is a story about justice and its side effects. It’s the kind of feeling that fills you as you pursue Pitan, an immortal thief who has been turned into a Shilatic student named Black Bull who is seeking justice and revenge due to the wildfires that have destroyed his home and family. There’s a lot more to this story, but I’m tolerant if I don’t mention the incredible artwork of Brian Valenza, the series’ co-creator and color artist. Alongside his co-creator Henry Barajas, Valenza was able to come up with a unique, immersive story. I only have a week to join the campaign, so I think it’s a crime to see them achieve their goals. So you need to make sure you have a look out on the project as soon as possible, I promise you will not regret it.

Little Red Ronin: Collector’s Edition Hardcover

Target: $4,974
End date: June 16, 2025
Goods: Get a special slipcase bundle edition for $99, a digital copy of $8, a legacy copy of $10, or higher. You can get the Collector’s Edition for $39.
Deluxe Hardcover Limited Edition Printing Red; A determined warrior on his quest to defeat the Great Wolf.
Little Red Ronin caught my eye as it looked like a love letter to Rabbit Yojimbo. Little Red Ronin is a dark and thrilling rethinking the story of the classic red riding hood, and only this time, Red is on a mission to hunt down the monster’s great wolf and redeem the name of her exiled grandmother. Set in Paultown, a creepy village where disappearance and bloodshed are dismissed as myths, Red’s journey is deeply personal, intense and urgent. And the comic only gets better with the praised teams of Garrett Gunn, Kit Wallis and Dave Lentz behind the project. There’s so much to get from this series that I have to mention it in my crowdfunding roundup. The best part is 25 days to fully fund the project if you are interested. Don’t miss the chance to check out the project!

The Art of Audra Eauclair
I don’t think it’s good to see works of art that I really leave me captivated. Every week, if you need to pour so many different kickstarters and independent series into a column, some of the sparkle of the new series disappears. This is not the case with Starburst, and as the name suggests, the comic feels like an explosion of bright hot colors and countless emotions poured from all the writers of Audra Aclair. For the first time, the renowned Canadian artist combines her stunning visual work with deep personal reflections on the world of art, mental health and challenges of maintaining creativity over a 15-year career. It’s worth your time to experience only the artwork of Auclair. I can’t recommend it enough.

Strangely Convincing: The Story of Dennis Kitchen
Creator: Tint Press
Target: $5,000
End date: June 19, 2025
Goods: Get a limited edition movie poster for $30 with a kitchen sink book, a strangely convincing digital copy of $30, a $30 chipboard sketchbook, or a higher tier.
Documentary films about counterculture, freedom of speech, comic book Maverick
Dennis Kitchen was a pioneer in underground comics, a First Amendment Warrior, a true American original, and now the story of his life is the subject of a fascinating documentary. From the oddly charming hippie cartoonist of Traces Kitchen to the influential publisher and founder of the comic book Legal Defense Fund, we take a wild trip through the kitchen. In interviews from comic legends such as Alison Bechdel and Eddie Campbell, as well as rare footage from Robert Crumb and Will Eisner, the film is an important part of the celebration of comics’ history and personal expressions. Filmmakers Soren Christiansen and Ted Intrucio offer a deep, interesting and illustrious view of the breathtaking kitchen legacy. Check out this project as this documentary is a truly deeply emotional part of comics history that will soon be memorable.

Death Transit Magpie
Creator: Karl Kirsch (Author/Artist/Creator)
Target: $10,828
End date: May 29, 2025
Goods: Digital copy costs $20, physical copy costs $30, Cover B costs $30, and double sets costs $50 for higher tiers.
The young woman ferries the souls of the dead into the afterlife in this sci-fi action-adventure comic inspired by Metroid and Hellboy.
Detransit Magpie stood out to me because its larger than life characters stand out, which are prominently displayed on the front of the project’s crowdfunding page. They look amazing. Therefore, it is not surprising that it comes from the hearts of someone like Karl Kerschul. That’s why I couldn’t help but realize that the project had already accumulated over $38,000 and had won the remaining seven days. When the project has so much traction, I love it and looking at the contents of this project, it’s not surprising. Blend sci-fi, horror and anime-inspired action into a phenomenal comic experience, Destrout Magpies acquire murderous mystery, ghosts and universe. There’s a lot going on with the comics, but if you’re a fan of these kinds of ideas, you won’t be disappointed.
