The celebratory career of comic book legend Dennis Kitchen was celebrated with a strangely persuasive new documentary by Soren Christiansen and Ted Intrucio, with a new kickstarter being released in collaboration with Tinto Press and Dennis Kitchen Archives.
Kitchen is an American cartoonist known for his groundbreaking work in the underground scene, the establishment of Kitchen Sink Press and the founder of the comic book Legal Defense Fund. The document follows a kitchen career, from his beginnings of self-publishing to his work, to his work that helps protect his fellow creators. The beat has an oddly convincing, exclusive clip.
Filmmakers Soren Christiansen and Ted Intrusio filmed hours of candid conversations with Dennis Kitchen, including Alison Beckdel, Warren Bernard, Eddie Campbell, Paul Gravett, Paul Gravett, Karen Green, Justin Hall, Gary Hallglen, Tom Henges, Mari Naomi, Patteter Poplecky, Papiten Poplessle and interim director Jeff Trexler of the Papiten Fund. The film also features rare archival footage from comic book legends Robert Crumb, Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman, as well as new animations from the iconic kitchen cartoons. The film depicts a kitchen career as an indie cartoonist, provocateur, publisher and founder of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
“In the 21st century, the world would have thought that Americans would see books banning, challenging free speech and threatening its own democratic principles,” Soren Christiansen said. “We had previously had threats to democracy, and every time these threats occurred, it was necessary for people like Dennis to stand up and fight for their undeniable rights. Distribution, and Kitchen Sink Press, are responsible for bringing groundbreaking and much-loved content to a larger audience.”
“Let’s face it, Dennis Kitchen is more necessary than ever,” Ted Intercio said. “We want people to benefit and learn about Dennis Kitchen from the struggle to tackle their challenges. Dennis is (and continues to fight) an artist, free speech, and an advocate for underrated voices. Cancel.”
