Have enough of the ongoing diamond sale and bankruptcy story of 2025? (Read the latest news here) Well, I got bad news for you, there’s more, and now it could affect the boom! A studio fan at a local library.
The boom was announced first! The studio was purchased by Penguin’s Random House last year, and then got news that the boom would move around regular comic streams in July and then in April. This rush to leave the sinking diamond ship may have unintended consequences on the boom! Boom Studios is a library e-book service, as it currently needs to handle Penguin Random House Digital Book Distribution rules.
Comics Plus is an e-book service used by libraries, and “PhR does not support the unlimited access and engagement model that Comics Plus needs to serve libraries and school customers.”
From comics and website posts:
boom! Studio Comics will be removed from the ComicsPlus collection on May 30, 2025, for both adults and children. Boom! The studio has been acquired by a content random house that the content library can provide to its members, taking away the entire collection.
A booming manga! The studio’s collection includes Dunes: Planet of the Apes, Artesia, Fireflies, Garfield, Lumberjacks, Bees, and Puppies. Read them quickly or miss them!
“Comics Plus is something that the most affordable e-book service library has, and library users deserve the accessibility they offer in the title of Boom Studios,” said Jack Phoenix, a cartoon librarian at Blueski. “Too often, publishers pay lip service for library support, but ruin us when no one is looking. Tell boom@ (email protection) that you will stay on Email Plus.
“It’s a shame we’ll lose our publisher partners for the sake of integration, but we knew it was likely the result of PRH’s winning Boom!
Comics Plus will continue to be a robust service for libraries and schools thanks to many library-friendly publishers who believe in providing equitable digital access to their readers. Dark Horse, Dynamite, Image Comics, Mad Cave, Onipress, Tokipop, Yenpress – among dozens of other people – continues to support unlimited simultaneous access through Comics Plus, continuing to add new titles each week. Guy Lecharles Gonzalez said he is Chief Content and Marketing Director for Library Pass.
“Libraries are very aware of the restrictive e-book licensing models that some publishers like, and our customers understand how these models will affect and are not available to readers through Comics Plus,” concluded Gonzalez.
Physical books are still available, so you can catch up with SIKTC. If you rely on digital copies, be sure to make a reservation as you are unlucky.
