In the ancestor recall, Ahoi Comics takes readers into the world. There, some of the most important black figures of all time become a man’s superpower in search of a missing wife.
The new supernatural series comes from Jordan Clark (Aquaman, Star Wars Adventure) and artist Atagun Ilhan (Poison Ivy), and follows Melvin Walling, an abstract painter who has won the superpower and is directly connected to history. Black History: For painter Melvin Walling, it’s a real superpower! When Melvin’s wife mysteriously disappears, he must call on the most important black figure of all time to help him search. A fascinating new saga from two Milestone Initiative members: writer Jordan Clark (Aquaman, Star Wars Adventure) and artist Atagun Ilhan (Poison Ivy, Milestone Universe: Shadow Cabinet).
Speaking in the upcoming series, Clark shared how important it is to celebrate black history through real-world storytelling.
“Black history is literally erased around us, so ancestor recalls feel like an urgent call to not only preserve it, but also celebrate the link between our past and future,” author Jordan Clark said. “Melvin’s Journey passes readers through time and space, introducing people rarely found in historical books such as Jean-Lewis Michel of Cheryl Lynn Glass, the biggest swordsman of the 17th century and the first black female race car driver.
“An ancestor recalls are part of everything, anywhere at once, part of Don Quixote,” said series editor Sarah Litt. “And that’s two interesting parts. Jordan and Atagun have created a surreal, mystical and charming powerhouse of cartoons that make you laugh, cry, travel to time, and consider the power of black history in each stunning panel.”
The first issue of the 5th issue series, Ancestral Recall #1, will be released on August 6th, 2025.
