Back in 2000, a few years before becoming a spster in today’s comic industry, writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore created the superhero parody comic battle pope. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the original series, and Skybound and Image Comics unveiled their anniversary hardcover collection in September this year.
For those new to the series:
When heaven, hell, and everything in between go to war, you hope that your prayers will not be answered by anyone other than to fight the Pope. Criticized by the Almighty God for a hard drink that feminizes evil ways, the Pope has a last chance of salvation.
Given the recent elections for the new Pope Leo XIV, it is fascinating to assume that this release is at the right time. But just like the conclave in the movie, choke the coincidence of timing. According to co-creator Robert Kirkman, “I swear we had a plan a few months ago! Full disclosure, we tried to spend time around Conclave this announcement, but it happened very quickly! And the first Americans?
He added:
“Well, regardless of that, I couldn’t be more excited to see the early professional (ISH) jobs collected in a truly heavenly format in deluxe! And Tony Moore is back to do a new cover, I can’t believe I’ve been in this business for 25 years. I met first, Matthew Roberts, Cory Walker and all the work is coming together here. Well, we were nothing.
Kirkman continued his immeasurable enthusiasm:
“Wait until you hold this book in your hand, it’s just gorgeous. Andres Juarez, the designer of Skybound Put, honestly, this book deserves Eisner for its best reprint collection designs. Can those energy books stop everything? Love.”
Battle Pope 25th Anniversary HC (ISBN 978-1-5343-3393-2) is available on the Comic Book Shop on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025.
