Small Town Spirits is a short, all-age graphic novel that explores the Irish old-fashioned Halloween celebrations through the Flanagan family. In a town where ancient Irish traditions are still celebrated, all Halloween is played in a series of games in honor of the spirits of the dead. Every year, the honorable O’Dell family creates a lovable, yet laughable flanagan ock laugh that shatters the dream of winning the mental game. However, this year, teen troublemaker Pad Flanagan plans to change everything, trying to trick the spirit of an ancient Celtic hero to train his family for a big event. Instead, he opens up a supernatural flood of mischief, magic and monsters that threaten to accidentally destroy his town. The loser becomes a legend in this terrifyingly fun folklore adventure. It will be released in Dark Horse Comics on May 13th, 2025.
Small Town Spirit was written by Zach Keller, known for writing the Cuphead series of graphic novels. The artwork for this book was handled by Gabriele Bagnoli, known for her various media tie-in projects in Disney, Dark Horse and boom! studio. Additional creative teams include colorist Valerio Aloro and letter Frank Kvetkovich. Keller said this about the series:
When it turns out Halloween comes from Ireland – just like my family, Fitzgerald, I jumped at the opportunity to reunite my roots by writing this book a book full of charm, cheers and the biggest spooky chaos.
Meanwhile, artist Gabriele Bagnoli said this:
Ireland is one of my most loved places. With this script, Zack lets me discover Irish traditions that I had no idea about. He also managed to draw many spirits, monsters and mythical creatures. It’s so much fun!
This series is perfect for fans of Keller’s Cuphead series and those who enjoy the work of artists such as Zil Thompson. Dark Horse Comics released an excerpt from the book before it takes place next week. An exclusive excerpt is shown below.
