The Blues Brothers, the classic musical comedy of the 1980s, is making its first leap into comics. Z2 Comics has announced that Blues Brothers: The Escape of Joliet Jake, Stella Aykroyd (daughter of Dan Aykroyd, the daughter of the original film’s co-writer and co-star), Luke Pisano and James Werner will be releasing a graphic novel written by Felipe Sobreiro along with the art of Felipe Sobreiro. Released on October 7th, 2025, the book honors the late John Belushi character, Jake Bruce, and centers around a detective who discovers that Jake is his father.
It’s 1997, and nearly 20 years after the events of the Bruce Brothers’ film and Chicago law enforcement, pursuing notorious music criminal Jake Bruce again after a mysterious escape. There is Robert Papagage, an up-and-coming detective. The world turns upside down when his mother reveals that the fugitive after him is his biological father…
During the investigation, Robert receives a bit of help from Elwood Blues and the musicians, discovering what everyone is actually chasing. An unlikely partnership forms between Robert and Wolffy. This is the blessed shroud orphan of Bruce’s brother Alma male, St. Helens. Together, they unravel a web of mystery that has been linked to the adventures of the Bruce brothers, together with Jake and Elwood, which we have never seen before! Return to the centre of the mischief, soul and bold pursuit of the re-offender. Sink your teeth into the adventures of the new Bruce Brothers.
The book marks the comic debuts of all three authors. Pisano is the son of Judith Belushi Pisano, a writer and marketing manager and the widow of Belushi who passed away last year. He said that the book was conceived (and dedicated) by her, and that she not only saved the story after John died, but also found the right partner to make that dream a reality along with the talents of Stella and James.
With a background in ghostwriting and documentary films, Stella Aykroyd discussed the size of the role her father, Alter Ego, in a press release, saying, “The Bruce Brothers “helped Sharpie Elwood to his Knuckles before he went on a show with Brother Gee.” For me, it’s the right way to apply bones to a car. “She said, “Our development process is guided and inspired by stories and real events from the lives of Judy, John and Dan, and uses it for the process of the Bruce Brothers’ concept and Easter eggs as well as for plot points.
Actor, filmmaker and musician Werner also said, “It makes perfect sense for the new generation of Bruce brothers to begin in comic book form. There, the possibilities for destroying police cars are endless, and there is no boundary in physics. The possibility of a jam partner is off the charts. I asked them to join the band.”
Bruce Brothers: Joliet Jake’s Escape features a preface by Dan Aykroyd and introduces the retail for $34.99 on hardback. You can pre-order now from a variety of bookstores. In the meantime, you can sign up for the Z2 website for updates that include details on the limited edition copy. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether the book will ignore the 1998 sequel Blues Brothers 2000 (which killed Jake Offscreen), but the premise and 1997 setting appear to reconsider it to some extent.
