Candidates for the Graphic Medicine Awards 2025 have been announced. The award presents comics that stimulate and enlighten various aspects of human health. The winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony in July this year.
The 2025 edition of the Graphic Medicine Awards received 89 submissions in all categories. Each winner will receive a $600 award and special commemorative item.
As ever, every year, the work listed on the nomination list highlights a wide range of subjects, including existence, trauma, cancer care, vaccines, and gender. The comics featured in each category are from traditional book publishers, small press agencies, medical and university institutions, newspapers and medical journals. If you think that comics are really invading, the field of graphic medicine is a ray of hope.
The Graphic Medicine Awards are organized by the Graphic Medicine International Collective, a non-profit organization that supports the interaction between Comics Medium and Health. The organization and the award itself are supported by a combination of public donations and a $5,000 anniversary gift in honor of Nancy and Herbert Wolf.
This year’s edition, launched in 2022, presents a new third category that highlights comics from the past year with useful intentions. This new category, the best educational comics, will take part in the Graphic Medicine Awards Best Short Form and Best Form Comics category (short forms are less than 28 pages).
Speaking about the new category, the Graphic Medicine Awards stated:
“A new category for this year’s awards are educational graphic medicine comics. This category is primarily intended to celebrate the excellence of health-related comics created for instructional purposes. These comics highlight one or more medical topics, treatments, illnesses, devices, and/or biological functions.
Typically, the Graphic Medicine Awards are part of the annual summer Graphic Medicine Conference. 2025 will be a suspended year, so there is no specific date for the winners to be announced.
The final meeting took place in Athlone, Ireland, from 16-18 July 2024. The winner of that year was a long form of Haile Gold’s Nerve (Street Noise Book), and Elaine M. Will’s self-published anxiety mini-comic spiral session was a short form.
