David Pepose and Jonathan Lau’s dynamite space ghost run made the fans old, new and happy. The team is currently adding an epic year to their list. This takes place after the event in the 12th issue of the Second Story Ark Finale. Space Ghost Annual #1 is scheduled to debut on June 11th, featuring an exciting list of cover artists such as Francesco Mattina, Jae Lee, June Chung, Bjorn Barends and Anthony Marques.

Beat chatted with Pepose about an oversized adventure.

Deanna Destito: So, where will this annual Space Ghost Cannon fall?

David Pepose: Our Space Ghost Annual is Capstone from my first year of storytelling in the book Jonathan Lau. Expect many high-octane actions between Space Ghost and Doom Council… not to mention Robo’s secret weapon against space. It’s an action-packed crescendo that will lead us to the next exciting story!

Destito: What was your favorite part of working in space with this character?

PEPOSE: My favorite part, especially about writing ghosts in the universe, is watching him grow and evolve as the dynamics between Yang and Jace continue to develop. It’s fun to write characters with some rough edges about him, but someone who always strives to get better, especially when that motivation comes from what he wants to do right by his adoption. Sometimes it takes two steps forward and a step back, but the space ghost relationship with twins is the emotional mind of the book, and whenever I write it, it always serves as a compelling compass for me.

Beyond that…it’s the bad guy! Space Ghost has an eclectic mix of supervillains, which opens him up to a story of so many different tones and subgenres. When I saw the original manga, it was clear that Alex Toss’ eye-catching designs gave each of these characters a huge amount of personality.

But first and foremost, we need to work with artist Jonathan Lau, colorist Andrew Dalhaus and letter Taylor Esposito. Space Ghost’s success was a team effort and seeing Jonathan, Andrew and Taylor firsthand all the ways they elevate the material was a very encouraging experience. This book won’t work without them.

Destito: What radioactive is there from this issue that fans can expect to affect the series?

PEPOSE: Space Ghost threats always come from two places. His villain threatens the dynamics of the known universe and the discoverer family with Jan and Jace. I can’t ruin the details, but what I can say is that there will be some major developments in the coming months that will have a deep ripple effect on Space Ghost and his family.

Destito: Can we tease other things from the future of Space Ghost?

PEPOSE: Space Ghost’s Rogues Gallery isn’t limited to Doom’s councils, but I’ve always believed there were some exciting new villains to be seen right away! Another thing I can say is that the scale of Space Ghost adventures ranges from deep individuals to epic scales that we have never seen before.

Destito: There are many dynamic covers for these issues. How many inputs do you have in them?

PEPOSE: I don’t actually see the cover until the solicitation drops, so I’m just as excited and surprised as you guys came out! Our cover team really lays it all on the field of this series. There are very exciting covers right away, including incredible bucketlist artists who decorate our books.
