The world of spawns has slowly expanded over the past few years, with the series dedicated to hellish anti-hero friends and enemies. In the case of black rituals: In the NYX #1 book, the focus shifts to the young witch Knicks. Following the defeat of the Devil Mammon in Spawn #184, NYX travels to New York City and is hit by an intrusive vision of the future. On top of that, a mysterious being called the Puritans is hunting witches, and the Knicks may be on his list.
The NYX #1 book features a superstar writer in the form of Thomas Healy, who is currently the editor-in-chief of the spawn title. This means that he is one of the few people other than Todd McFarlane, who knows INS, who knows Spawn’s mythology, and he makes good use of it, especially in the order in which NYX witnesses the future. The sequence is packed with hints on what’s coming on the NYX timeline and weaves a story of tragedy caught up in.
The Nyx #1 book sequence won’t take much hit without Nat Jones’ artwork. Jones previously described the adventures of Nyx when he rode the main spawn title in 2004. Twenty years later, his art remains as unforgettable as ever. Shadows fall on buildings and people, lending an air of threat to the environment. The symbol shines with the inexplicable force engraved in the glow of the ground, hinting at a magical world that lies deadly out of reach. But the most persuasive are NYX and the Puritans. He stands out thanks to his whimsical figure and red-colored glasses and her purple striped hair and a full-black ensemble, respectively.

The artwork is completed with AndWorld Design lettering, which shifts colors based on who is talking. The narration takes on the golden shade, and its lack of boundaries immediately catches the eye. One amazing touch is that whenever Nyx or other witches speak a spell, their words are darkened and mysterious symbols are painted. Readers are reminded that despite being far from the war between heaven and hell that drives the main conflict of Spawn, this is still a world full of supernatural ongos.
The NYX book will definitely appeal to fans, but due to lore from the previous spawn stories, the newcomers in the book may be lost a bit. But in a way, Spawn shows that his world has grown to the point where it becomes as complicated as the Marvel and DC universes, and to a fairly surprising point for the creator-owned character.
