Acclaimed Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher Oni Press will partner with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products to revive a fan-favorite comic book series starring many of the beloved characters of Jake the Dog, Finn the Human, and oooo: Adventure Time #1, and arrive at your local comic book shop Shelve.

Written and drawn by cartoonist and animator Nick Wynn (known for his Silver Sprocket Bloody Mary), and lettered by award-winning designer Sean Lee, Adventure Time #1 returns to the world of Jake and Finn, featuring the ultimate and adventure anibal of Rimes Book Animer’s final awards and adventure anibals.

Beat chatted with Wynn about the return of this beloved series. Please read it!

Ollie Kaplan: Was there any discussion about setting up comics before and after a TV series?

Nick Wynn: No! Two great editors on Oni Press, Megan Brown and Jung Lee, asked to pitch the story. There were no rules regarding lore or setting. The only parameter was that it had to be about Finn and Jake, so I really wanted to hone it. The setting is separate from the main story and has an alternative timeline with major important characteristics.

Kaplan: Fans of the animation show know that Finn’s sword plays an important role in the series. Can you tease how Finn’s new sword fits in Adventure Time lore?

Winn: Best of Buds’ Finn’s Sword is a regular sword that is enhanced by Fin’s drive to become an adventurer. The sword is not only a weapon for Finn, but it also plays a significant role later in the friendship between Finn and Jake.

Kaplan: Have you had any challenges or surprises when trying to recreate the voices and feel of comic-style animated adventure time characters? How did you approach world building and character development?

Wynn: Adventure Time Seasons 1-3 should be part of my favorite episodes. I wanted to make sure the comics matched the show’s favorite but heartfelt tone, so discovering a small interview “Adventure Time Distant Band” helped me so much. Penward’s boy band song about running away from home was essential to writing this manga, haha!

Kaplan: As an animator, how do you translate the energy and movement of animation into a static comic panel?

Winn: The animation is translated into my comics as energy. Poses, expressions and ink styles come from my time on the manga network, especially since television animations require quick and clean, and draw the best pictures as quickly as possible.

Kaplan: Was writing a story about returning to the world of OOO requires research?

Wynn: Yes! I mainly looked into the tone of the show and how the characters interact with each other. I wanted new or existing characters to make them feel like they’ve lived in OOO for a very long time. If not for a long time, I wanted them to at least feel like they belonged to Finn and Jake’s life.

Kaplan: What is your creative process like when you’re working on a new comic?

Wynn: Hmm, I mainly brainstorm on walks listening to music when I’m thinking about something new. Then I run it by Megan and Jung to get their ideas! Then there’s a difficult part. I actually have to sit down and go to a 12-round boxing match with myself to write about Dan. If you lose by knockout, you have a completely finished script! Maybe I’ve had a few naps.

Kaplan: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Wynn: The comics look great. We are extremely grateful to have carried out our first problem with a great collaborative story with Derek Ballard, but cartoonists like Asia Simone and Brenda Hickey have done a great job with the next problem! More artists brought their A-game for adventure time and I’m very excited to read everyone! It will become algebra!
