Every week there’s a real horny that hits the stands of new comics. Readers often know exactly what they are most interested in (they have their pull lists sitting in the reliable hands of comic shops), but they are sometimes told about opposing that old trim and judging the book by its cover.

Some truly amazing cover art hits every week. These were the ones that caught Colin’s eye for the week of April 2, 2025.

All New Poison #5

Incentive Variants by Dike Ruan

This time we’re going to be another great costume colour/negative space bleed cover from Dike Ruan. The bold logo and gold highlights of the new Venom costume are an interesting and novel take on classic design, and here it works in all its goopy and drooling glory.

Friends with Archie: Level up! #1

Variant by Bill Galvan

It may be a bit cynical to say that the mainline Archie comics may not be exactly cutting edge, but that is also inherently true. If you want evidence, there is a fantastic Billgarban cover, a parody of Burgertime’s 1982 North American NES Box Art by Data East. The game may not be a hot topic, but there have been rarely any timeless escapes of Riverdale teens since then.

Champion concert #1

Variant by Ivan Tarabela

This Champion’s cover concert truly captures the stage energy of the modern pop icon, as if Dazzler’s rhinestones were a choice for Taylor and Sabrina’s wardrobe. The Talabella leans against the glittering luster of the original costume and features an outrageous disco ball pendant. What you should feel Hokey and date feels more rational after the current stage costumes of Divas.

Giant Detective #5

Variants by Magenta King

A small FBI agent in a big mouth. pain? yes. I loved the title treatment and it broke and boldly pushed to the side. I haven’t checked in the first four issues in this series, but the King’s cover sold me all. You can’t see this and don’t ask yourself what the hell is going on.

I was a serial killer #1 at a fashion school

Variant by Jerry

Speaking of selling concepts in one image, Jerry’s disgusting meat coat says everything you need to know about why I was a cereal killer at a fashion school. The simple, baby blue background and jagged lettering of the title work perfectly with the darkness of Lee’s trademark scratch. The juxtaposition of the cute little teddy bear necklace is a killer.

Ironheart: Bad Chemistry #1

Variants by Mateus Manhanini

Stained Glass Super Hero! The refined new iron heart suit looks sharp and the details are bold. Many technical accent lines. Setting it all against beautifully symmetrical framing and asymmetric blue panels, this cover really pops. It’s a stunning character highlight.

JSA #6

Variants by Ethan Young

Ethan Young’s JSA has a bit of a boxy appeal. His figure is subtle at the edge between standard comic art and the territory of the “anime series”, and the small lighting details aid in that sensibility. These characters appear to be able to move at any moment and desperately wish they would.

Moon Night: Honshu #7’s Fist

Variant by Dan Panocian

The 8-Ball is a goofy and epic relic of the previous era. He screams Marvel from the 1970s (he and Orb may have been spherical friends), but made his debut in 1991 (this seems to be a mismatch to the overall atmosphere of the early 90s). His recent use in Moon Night books was great, turning him into a good guy once. This cover appears to imply that he is back to his old buddy tricks. I love the laid-out texture of the Panosian artwork placed on top, suggesting the grit and time of the diving bar where this pool table lives.
