Dynamite Entertainment announces Red Sonja: Noir Special

Dynamite Entertainment has unveiled a completely new special Red Sonya Noir written by fan favorite author David Avalon (Blood Drawing) and artist Edu Menna (War of the Quarry). When unveiling the series, Dynamite said:

The ultimate Femme Fatale has been featured in so many different kinds of stories over the years, from her flagship sword and magical adventures to genre twists and unexpected crossovers. Fans this summer will be able to enjoy the miraculous results when Hirukania steel blends in with pulp adventures. The song and legendary muscular, crimson-haired heroine fell into trouble once again during the hard-boiled Hiborian era.

The special is 28 pages long and features a CardStock cover, making it ideal for collectors. This alternative view of this character focuses on Red Sonja’s quest for vengeance after her mercenary partner is killed in cold blood. She finds herself in the midst of the conflict in Crimson Calypso, a mysterious and precious artifact. Running through the web of deceit, she must use her wisdom and her powers to defeat her enemies. Influenced by the aesthetics and storytelling techniques of classic noir films, it may not be something that Red Sonja fans are used to, but it should be an interesting take on the characters of legendary comic book.

David Avallone debuts with a character on the Red Sonja: Black, White and Red pages, paying tribute to Ger on the Comic Bettie page. With his contributions to Shadow, Zorro and others, Avallone has been experienced in the field of pulp fiction and noir and will do his best to this unique interpretation of Red Sonja characters.

Edu Menna became famous for her atmospheric and moody artwork on titles such as 1979 Army of Darkness and Alice Cooper. This is actually a return to Menna’s character. This is Menna’s decade following work on the original Red Sonya annual #4 of Dynamite’s original Fourtha character. His visual talent will certainly enrich Avalon’s script and add to this take of the character.

Red Sonja Noir was released by Dynamite Entertainment in June this year and is currently available for pre-order.
