What is guaranteed by Ryan North’s comics is that every issue has enough entertainment to justify the price. That’s certainly the case with Star Trek: Lower Deck #5, this week we’ll be launching another two-part adventure with time travel. Considering how often Star Trek doesn’t get time travel (40 out of over 940 episodes) is, it’s a problematic treat that continues to beautifully bring together comedy and sci-fi.
The issue, titled “Desperate Times,” begins with Cerritos crew leaving the coast while the ship undergoes maintenance. Mariner knows this is shady as Cerritos has undergone similar maintenance recently. The answer to that mystery includes Tom Foolery, a time traveler, in which Mission Mariner makes moves to solve herself and her friends.
Move, North and artist Jack Lawrence confuses time travel many times as Mariner and her friends stop time travelling, but everything around them does. This means that Mariner and her friends will remain the same thanks to the handy gadgets that set up a clever time travel caper. From a sci-fi perspective, it’s smart and you can go to North Ham in comedy.

The story’s MacGuffin includes devices that can be seen in a rather fantastic episode of Star Trek: Strange New World. As always, North spits out the matter with a fun nod to previous episodes, Alien Races and Star Trek history. At this point, it’s pretty easy to designate this series as the typical ultimate Star Trek fan series, and North brings it to the series.
Lawrence continues to bring a style that perfectly matches the cartoon look. Someone could probably add movement to these drawings and it would rise up on a 4K TV. Visuals are extremely useful with multiple scene changes thanks to time travel and locations other than spacecraft. There are also some cool effects that use digital effects to communicate time changes.
