Mad Cave Studios imprint Maverick is lamented by Paula Cheshire as the 2022 graphic novel has acquired a new English translation. Originally published in Spanish under the title El Duelo, the graphic novel follows Paula, who navigates her life after her mother died of cancer.
If someone dies, there is an ineffectiveness – loss. No matter what. There is a whirlwind of emotions and confusion. We don’t know what will happen to the dead after death, but living knows what will happen. Paula beautifully speaks to how she deals with the loss of her mother and the sudden loss of this fascinating and moving graphic novel.
The graphic novel won the Chesire Acclaim and The Antifaz Award 2023. Nannette McGuinness and Mercedes Guhl translate to mourning, but the lettering is by Jodie Troutman. Maverick expressed his excitement about releasing the story.
Lauren Hitzsuzen, senior editor of Maverick, said, “It’s a very moving book about mourning, nuance and depth of loss. Death is a part of life, but how we are involved in death and how we feel about losing someone is a completely unique and individual experience that lasts for years. The story of dealing with Paula’s mother’s death is something that readers think is friendly and moving, and we are proud to bring it to the Maverick Line.”
In mourning from Mad Cave Studios and Maverick, he arrives at the Comic Book Shop on August 26th, 2025. The 136-page graphic novel sells for $14.99.
