Trade Paperback Collection allows you to make great time capsules. Thunderbolts: Today’s Winter Soldiers are back in 2016. This is the time when Marvel kneeled on a whole new, completely different initiative and saw some interesting changes in the publisher. In the Avengers comic line, the “Standoff: Attack on Pleasant Hill” event just happened, bringing home the young Steve Rogers as Captain America and introducing us to Kovik, who will later become the main player in the story. The Winter Soldier just spent time as a “wall man” from the fallout of the “original sin” event, and 2017 marked the 20th anniversary of Thunderbolt. All these ingredients are perfect for launching new comics, leading to volume 3 of Thunderbolts, and are currently being collected across 12 runners for this deal.

The story within this trade is a great introduction to the Thunderbolts team, but if you’re here for the film, you’d be a bit surprised. Most of these characters have not yet been featured in the film, so your main character will probably be a Winter Soldier. Jim Zub wrote the series and he did an incredible job of retrieving the original Thunderbolts and interacting with them in the “all new, completely different” Marvel universe. The characters have great personalities and often clash, but Zub does an amazing job making you feel like you’re investing in them. You care about their past, their pain and inspiration. Honestly, these stories make me crazy even after all these years.

Jim Zub can really weave the series into a Marvel universe. At the start of this deal, you’re dealing with “standoffs” from his series and Thunderbolts coming out of Winter Soldier, so it was great to see them bond. The story has guest stars such as Inhuman, Squadron Supreme, and Miles Morales, but the overall storyline runs parallel to Hydracap, or “Steville” if necessary, intersecting with the Civil War. The story doesn’t sacrifice characters at the request that it be a crossover issue. Instead, Zub makes it part of his world, showing that the character is seriously reacting to what’s going on. All this adventure will finish off your Hydra-Cap Arc and lead you to a secret Imperial event. Sadly, the ending leaves behind elements and characters left behind in the shock, so you’re hanging.

John Marin does most of the heavy lifting as he is the main artist in most issues, and Sean Izarks is potential with the two of them. The two work well, as there’s not much distraction when Sean comes to the sub. The achievements of colorist Matt Yakki, matching colours, help keep that momentum going. The art team has found great ways to showcase the action, comedy and drama that this Thunderbolts team experiences, and has a fun showcasing the script. Many moments highlight the creative team’s work, including Beer Run Problem #6, the tormented romance between Mach-X and Songbird in Problem #9, and Zemo’s Seduction #10. Overall, this collection will entertain readers, laugh at outdated references, and be drawn to new characters in the Marvel Universe that you’d like to learn more. Justice like entertainment, certainly!
