In 2017, Marvel launched a new ongoing Runaways comic series from writers Rainbow Rowell and Artist Kris Anka, along with the adaptation of Hulu Television. Since their first debut over 20 years ago, the runaway teen hero character has maintained avid fanbase. Their own comic title headlines have been somewhat sporadic over the years, but the characters have consistently appeared throughout Marvel’s universe. This week, the publisher unveiled a new runaway issue 5 miniseries as part of one world of doom events. Arrived this June, author Rainbow Lowell will be back with artist Elena Casagrandé joining him.
The series features new members joining the team, especially the reprogrammed De Bott, placing the team on the cross of Emperor Doom himself.
Here’s how publishers explain the miniseries:
Marvel’s most crude family has seen better days. Nico Minor has lost her, her best friend and her magic. Carolina, Chase and Alex are off the picture, and Gert is doing his best to rock the rest of the rampage from the autopilot run. But when Dr. Doom tries to get his own Dobot back! – That’s when you start running…
Returning to character is a dream come true for Lowell:
“Everyone who knows me knows I will show up for a party where runaways are invited,” Lowell shared. “They are my greatest favorite of all time and my true love. I can’t wait for Runaways fans to see Elena Casa Grande take on the kids – they look so cool – and to see Stephanie Hans’ timeless cover. I think we’ve come up with a very interesting way to weave runaways into one world under the Doombot story, while still loyal to the independent spirit of the book.”
Artist Elena Casa Grande, known for his winning work at Black Widow’s Eisner, expressed great excitement about working on the project.
“This is my first team book and I’m so happy to be able to work on these specific characters,” Casa Grande said. “I want to continue to stay true to the aesthetics of runaways, using the right mood for that unique storytelling. From Stefano Caselli to Sara Pichelli, I knew the runaways from friends who worked on them. I loved seeing the team evolve. I’m excited to bring the fun and joy of runaways to their fans!”
The first issue features a main cover by artist Stephanie Hans, as well as a variant cover by Peach Momoko and Ejicule, and a wraparound variant cover by Casa Grande.
