This is the end of the world.
As all vampire vicious fathers say that the humiliating day in the sun is over, Jed Mackay, Pepe Lalaz and Marte Garcia’s opening line to Blood Hunt #1 is bones It’s getting colder. Varnae is an ambitious, confident, miserable villain, casting spells that block all the light from reaching the surface. Around the world, dark force energy enforcers are ejected for magic, spilling blood in the sky until the entire planet is enveloped in a dark darkness. And with the arrival of the eternal night, Valnai’s illness spreads across Marvel’s Earth, so they feed the vampire.
Our planet Earth is also sick: it runs through the heat. Just a few weeks ago, the world’s weather agency confirmed that production areas have warmed at 1.5 degrees Celsius (approximately 2.3 f) over the past 125 years, with 2024 being the hottest year in human history recorded. did. The best decade ever has been the last 10 years.
High temperatures around the world are not the only symptoms. Wildfires are devastating areas, heavy rain during hurricane landings washes down roads and homes, and extreme heat is a killer that overtakes modern pandemics. We are stuck with the warming that we have caused, and people are suffering. If recent extreme events are indicators, the sky in front of us certainly darkens.
Can you treat the planet?
Marvel Comics
A set of ideas have been proposed as a stop gap tool to slow or stop climate change. “Geoengineering” refers to the use of technology to intentionally intervene in combating global warming. These ideas range from the mundane (a machine that pulls carbon dioxide directly from the air) to fantastical science fiction (huge space mirror). However, one proposal is creepy similar to Varnae’s plan to spread Darkforce.
This suggests that humans should intentionally release small solid particles suspended in the air at altitude and at ambient temperatures. These particles bring some of the sun’s rays back into space, keeping the planet cooler and offsetting some of the warming we have caused. This is sometimes called “solargeoengineering,” and has been extensively studied by scientists and governments.
However, this plan is not without risk. Solargeo engineering does not help our acidifying oceans. It can be unpredictable and difficult to supervise, and can harm the ozone layer. And once the process begins, the aerosol needs to be released consistently without pausing for a long time (stop means that climate change is ringing). So, while it may be possible to offset the heat that has been applied to the Earth, it cannot offset all the harm. Solargeo engineering is one of the possible solutions to the climate challenges our species faces, but it is not a silver bullet we might want.
So what other options are there? What can you do about climate change? Burning of fossil fuels requires immediate, aggressive, and sustainable reductions. How can I help?
You can talk about it.
Talk about climate change
Only through collective and coordinated efforts can we work to reduce carbon emissions and avoid future climate outcomes. But we need to talk to each other as the first step we need. It may seem like a simple conversation with a friend at a local comic bookstore, but it can’t make a difference, but it can achieve a lot.
Talking about climate change helps us realize that we are not just worried about issues. Many people are worried about climate change, but no one has expressed concern yet! Climate conversations help identify shared values, build empathy, trust, unity, and help the community organize what is important to them. Finally, naming this important issue together took the first step to solving it.
In chapters 5 and final of Blood Hunt, Chaos reigns on Earth. Varnae is revealed as the nigh-nipotent villain behind it, with the Avengers on the ropes and Darkforce continuing to cloud the sky. At the same time, on a quieter set of panels, Clea, Doctors Strange and Doom met to discuss solutions to their problems. Confined to astral form, Strange cannot cast a spell that ends darkness and frees the world from the twisted influence of Valnai. The heroes came to talk to him and ask for his help, hoping that their conversation would end in a miracle.
Varnae held his dark shaking, strange, Clea, Doom discussed Avengers helplessly. They met, talked about problems, built trust, organized plans, and implemented solutions. In the end, it was a heroic conversation that saved the world.
Every February, to help celebrate Darwin’s Day, the science section of aipt creates critical thinking for the skeptic month! Skepticism is an approach that emphasizes evidence and evaluates claims that apply science tools. All the month, highlights pop culture skepticism and *pop culture skepticism*.
AIPT Science is presented jointly by AIPT and New York City skeptics.
