Published by Graphics Lab 2, Gye in the Valley of Gold follows Kyle Harlbat’s technical career. The story details Hurlbut’s experiences building a career and getting a job at Hewlett Packard during the silicon revolution of the late 20th century. The graphic novel was released on December 3, 2024 and has already received positive reception from critics.
Hurlbut quotes his love for cartoons from his father “reading cartoons like dessert (from his local Seattle newspaper).” One of Hurlbut’s previous casual projects was a family born from a cartoon he created for his father’s birthday card before he decided to make a pivot to talk about his career in Silicon Valley. It came from creating a loose collection for graphic novels.

Hurlbut explained how barren the tech sector was when he began his career, and how it was like “on his first ship and discovering a new world.” The university courses in the media, electrical engineering, and mathematics departments were all slow and basic. “Because of that background, I wanted to share how quickly, crazy and fun it was to be in the right place at the right time. My readers are a career surrounded by all the technology I have been invented. I hope that I can learn some general ideas about how to navigate my life and how to do it. It continues to change the world.”
The 66-page count graphic memoir priced at $16.99 in physical print and available digitally for $9.99. Fans can find Kye on Barnes & Noble and Amazon’s Valley of Kinen.
