Satoko, a beautiful daughter of the noble family, has a disease that will not allow her to live very long, but someone there is panic for her to die. She is lured and killed by the mysterious assassin Shinpei, who has a dark, wild look in his eyes.

Satoko asks Shinpei not to spare her, but he only does so if she offers something of high value. Desperately, Satoko offers herself in marriage…and to her relief and fear, shinpei accepts. Will love bloom between them, or is it dangerous and lies?

The premise of manga is something that interests me. I’m a sucker of good romance and the elements of danger that exist in the story, and it caught my attention, especially in shinpei. I never imagined that Shinpei was as creepy as he was portrayed in art. He is also very casual about chopping his arms and legs from a person. After all, murder is his profession.

When I first got a glimpse of him, I wondered how he was so engrossed in the idea of marriage. Sure, Satoko is beautiful, but he doesn’t know much about her beyond that…until Satoko says she’ll die late. This is not clearly explained, but I am sure the details have captivated Shinpei, a man who always appears in death and expects to reach hell.

Shinpei is fatal and uneasy and is quickly devoted to Satoko. He sincerely desires marriage and promises Satoko to “make her a happy woman” (he tells her while she is covered in blood). And the strange thing is that you can get a bit of a glimpse of this throughout the story! It seems unlikely that Shinpei can be romantic, but he takes Satoko to see the fireflies in a beautiful grove. He promises her dedication and in all his madness, you can see that he can.

The problem is whether Satoko allows Shinpei to love her, or she will only use him to extend the small life she has left behind.

Satoko, who has the disease that kills her, does not make her weak. She stands up for herself regarding her relationship with her sister Miwako. She is very passive and jealous of Satoko’s beauty and long lines of potential suitors. Miwako sheds tears at Satoko’s stepmother, and runs away. The expression on the woman’s face on the panel shows that there is hatred there. Is it enough for her to hire a hitman to kill Satoko? It was premature to tell, and Volume 1 didn’t set out to reveal the identity of the person who ordered the hit. It becomes an ongoing mystery.

When Satoko is kidnapped, it is her quick thinking that stops Shinpei from killing her. Satoko realizes that, as she is the daughter of a nobleman, it means wealth and comfort to her and her husband. This is why she offers herself to Shinpei for marriage and promises him a good life. Love never falls into the equation, but shinpei surprises Satoko with a small explosion of devotion. She never expected him to be taken with her, but he still does.

I’m rooting for them. It’s a strange pairing, plagued by tension and artifacts, but Shinpei continues to surprise Satoko with how enthusiastic his emotions are, and if Satoko learns not to be afraid of Shinpei, they I really think there is a chance to create a real relationship.

If you’re looking for a romantic story of a bit of mayhem and mystery, look for Firefly Wedding. The art is expressive and gorgeous, the main character gets hooked, and the story draws you from the beginning. Who will survive, let alone survive this relationship? You will only know if you continue reading, and yes, this is worth reading.

Firefly Wedding Volume 1 is available in print and digital form from Viz Media and other online retailers. Volume 2 is approaching the release date of April 29th, 2025. You can pre-order now through Viz Media.
