Sega announces player account system

Sega has introduced a new system for player accounts. A Sega Account connects all of a player’s games and both Sega and Atlus services. It’s also where the two studios share news, events, updates, and promotions about their respective titles. Anyone can register for an account for free.

Even better, Sega also offers bonuses and goodies to account members. The first reward users can unlock is Kazuma Kiryu’s special costume DLC for Like a Dragon: Pirate Rokuza in Hawaiian, scheduled to be released next month. This ensemble can be redeemed by anyone who sets up a Sega account by March 7th.

With so many studios turning to games-as-a-service, requiring players to create an account or online profile is becoming standard practice. Sega has been a little slow to get on this train, but there are some industry-standard features still in development for Sega Accounts, such as a page of records related to games played. At this time, the website does not say if or when an account is required.

In announcing the platform, Sega said that “a variety of new services and features are coming soon.” It’s already known that Sega is working on an all-new Virtua Fighter game, but it’s also said goodbye to the company’s other classic games. Sega seems to be in a period of transition, and it should be interesting to see what else they have in store this year.
