Power Rangers Prime #3 Review

People often ask me what I like about Power Rangers. Besides literally growing up with the series, apart from giant robots and karate battles, Power Rangers is ultimately about finding allies. From the original Mighty Morphin roster to the Cosmic Fury, teams of Rangers have all found friends and makeshift families after banding together to save the world. This is a theme touched on in Power Rangers Prime #3.

But in a world where the Power Rangers are public enemy number one, Lauren’s potential Ranger team is about to land on the “dysfunctional” side of the family dynamic. While Mark, Jun, and Orion are willing to help Lauren regain her powers, Valentina is at odds with her, and given that she’s dating the leader of the VR Troopers, our heroes are against it. It won’t be long before you come across one. What doesn’t help matters is the fact that Rita Repulsa leaves a trail of destruction.

Melissa Flores knows how to write great character interactions. Her script is full of them, including Lauren and Valentina clashing and Bulk struggling to get along with Rita (and her endless arsenal of put-downs). She also continues to introduce this new way of looking at the world with twists that will long surprise you. Time Ranger fan. The Power Rangers command center gets a surprising new status quo, with another deep ranger character making a cameo appearance.

The biggest change in Flores concerns Rita herself. Specifically, the source of her magic changes, and that change causes her to encounter Lauren and the others. This also leads to a plot development that I hadn’t previously imagined. But in this world? It makes perfect sense and is the epitome of why Prime is a comic for both long-time Ranger fans and newcomers. The former will see familiar stories unfold in new ways, while the latter will find a Power Rangers story to follow along with.

boom!

Flores’ script is brought to life by Yug, who continues to show his talent in action scenes. What stands out is the fight Lauren and Rita get into. At first glance, Lauren appears defeated. Rita is a bona fide witch, as she is unable to tap into the powers of the Rangers and is trapped in an unknown location. However, she still holds her own and Yg delivers ferocious kicks and punches while avoiding Rita’s spells.

Fabi Marques makes Yg’s artwork pop with flares of color that change depending on the scene and the characters involved. Speaking of Rita, the striking contrast between her pure white gown, hair, and sparkling red eyes catches the eye. For VR troopers, light shines from their metal armor. The armor has the same red/black/silver color scheme, despite having a vastly different design. Marquez colors the background behind Lauren and her friends to hint at who and what the rangers will give in the future.

Power Rangers Prime #3 continues to shake up the Power Rangers mythos in new and interesting ways, including team-ups that no one imagined. But it’s also a reminder to longtime Ranger fans that no matter the medium, some things about this series will never change.

YG’s talent for action scenes is undeniable.

Fabi Marquez knows how to utilize color, including hints at who the new Ranger will be.

The stage is set for a battle between Power Rangers and VR Troopers.

It’s a cliffhanger that makes you wish you had the next issue on hand!
