§ This will be shorter than a regular K’n’B. Because…well, I think we’ve had enough news for a week.
§ Jack Cohen is back on the move! She recently joined Abrams Comic Arts as Director of Public Relations and Promotions for Abrams Comic Arts and all of its affiliates. Cohen was most recently at Tapas and previously at Fantagraphics. This is obviously a great hire for both parties. Congratulations, Jack!
§ While we’re losing comic book news sites left and right, Broken Frontier is still out there fighting. They recently announced the winners of the Broken Frontier Awards 2024 (Pee Pee Poo Poo wins again!) and inducted Emma Hayley of SelfMadeHero and Silver Sprocket. Good choice!
The site also announced six small press creators to watch in 2025. This spotlights the work of Beastly Worlds aka Beatrijs Brouwer, Cara Brown, Chris King, Rein Lee, Shuning Ji, and Zen K. We need new stars, so check them out. And Broken Frontier, keep plugging away.
§ Only in the fandom: Did a best-selling romance novelist steal another author’s novels? The New Yorker investigates the plagiarism lawsuit brought by Lynn Freeman against Lynn Wolf’s popular series “Crave.” There is. Along the way, we also talk a lot about the romance genre, which has exploded in popularity lately.
Many of the romance agents, writers, and editors I spoke to weren’t concerned about the field’s frenetic pace, but some felt it could be overwhelming. “I think writers are put in an impossible position,” said award-winning fantasy novelist Holly Black. “Nobody wants to cut corners on quality, so you have to do heroic things like this to get your book done the way you want it within a near-impossible deadline.” Speed. The same conditions that foster “clickbait pressure” can also foster “clickbait pressure,” she added. The author identifies the most appealing metaphors and reproduces them as efficiently as possible. Book blogger and author Jenny Trout told me: The author is giving people what they want, but at the same time it’s like reading the same book over and over again. ”
Popular trophy genres are sometimes a bit cut and pasted. Liz Peltier, publisher at Entangled, a publishing company specializing in this genre, told another author, “The problem with traditional publishing is that you just let writers write what they want, and you can’t use TikTok hashtags.” They don’t even think about what will happen to them,” he said. May it be. ” Can you imagine that?
